Knicks’ Josh Hart on the moment he realized the Spurs were struggling

SouthernWorldwide.com – New York Knicks star Josh Hart revealed the precise moment he realized the San Antonio Spurs were destined for defeat in the NBA Finals, even before they met on the court.

Hart, a veteran player at 31 years old, pointed to a specific instance during the Spurs’ jubilant celebration following their Game 7 victory in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This triumph had propelled them to the Finals, with Victor Wembanyama visibly emotional in the aftermath.

“Everyone was telling them, ‘Yo, they’ve got to beat OKC. OKC’s going to repeat,'” Hart recounted during an episode of “The Roommates Show,” a podcast co-hosted with his teammate Jalen Brunson, which was recorded at Madison Square Garden on a Friday.

Hart elaborated on his observation. “They beat OKC. For a young team, I feel like that was the mountaintop for them. That’s when I looked at (Brunson) and I was like, ‘You see that reaction? Because, like they think they’re going to win it. They think it’s over.'”

He then drew a stark contrast between the Spurs’ overwhelming elation after their conference finals win and the New York Knicks’ more reserved mindset. The Knicks had just swept the Cleveland Cavaliers, securing their place in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.

“You look at our reaction after we beat Cleveland. It was tough to celebrate because we were like, ‘We got four more.’ Obviously, winning the Eastern Conference is an amazing accomplishment, but we all looked at this like this is just a step. This isn’t the destination. This is just a step,” Hart explained.

The sentiment he expressed was evident. “The reaction after Game 4 in Cleveland showed that.”

Hart’s assessment proved prescient. The young Spurs team, despite their talent, faltered significantly in the Finals. They squandered double-digit leads in all four of their losses against the Knicks.

The Knicks, on the other hand, demonstrated remarkable poise and resilience throughout the series. Their ability to come back from significant deficits was a defining characteristic, with three of the five largest comebacks in NBA Finals history occurring during their matchups against the Spurs.

It was only after clinching the championship in Game 5 that the Knicks players allowed themselves to truly celebrate. Throughout the series, their consistent mantra was that each game started at a “0-0” score, underscoring their unwavering focus.

During the NBA Finals, Josh Hart maintained his characteristic impactful performance. He was a defensive stalwart, a dominant rebounder, and an effective facilitator on the offensive end.

Across the Knicks’ 19 playoff games, Hart posted impressive averages. He contributed 10.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per contest, solidifying his role as a crucial player for the championship-winning team.
