Rep. Goldman’s Bid for Victory: Rage Bait or Genuine Strategy?

opinion11 Views

SouthernWorldwide.com – New York Democrat Representative Dan Goldman is increasingly being compared to Marie Antoinette in the context of New York politics. While democratic socialists are railing against the wealthy elite and pledging extensive welfare programs, Goldman is doubling down on his commitment to more impeachments and investigations. This approach appears to be faltering for the quintessential establishment candidate.

He is reportedly trailing his opponent, housing advocate and former Comptroller Brad Lander, by over 20 points. The sentiment of “let them eat impeachments” does not seem to be resonating with his constituents.

While Goldman attempts to counter the challenge from his left with some economic proposals, he is largely sticking to the strategy that propelled him to election a few years ago. In what is described as an “age of rage,” Goldman has excelled by promoting unvarnished and intense anger.

AFTER LOSING SENATE SEAT, CASSIDY ANSWERS WHETHER HE REGRETS VOTING TO IMPEACH TRUMP

Since entering politics, his campaign has centered on what has been a reliable winning strategy in New York: relentless and obsessive attacks on former President Donald Trump. Goldman ensured he was consistently the most incensed about all things Trump.

In the current election cycle, Goldman has reverted to the same theme, promising new investigations and impeachments.

Goldman recently stated on MS NOW that he intends to lead any impeachment efforts against Trump. He claimed, “[Maryland Democrat Rep.] Jamie Raskin and I will be leading investigations into Trump’s corruption, into all of the cabinet officials.”

Even as his polls indicated he was behind Lander, on May 18, he announced a new basis for impeaching Trump, citing a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” This settlement fund is earmarked for individuals investigated and prosecuted in connection with the January 6th riot.

Some have criticized the establishment of this fund as irregular and lacking sufficient congressional consultation. This does not necessarily imply that Trump is incorrect regarding the violation of his tax disclosures or the abuses that transpired after January 6th.

In a March 22, 2021, interview with CBS News, Justice Department official Michael Sherwin stated that the department aimed to send a message through the harsh treatment of defendants “to ensure that there was shock and awe.” The outcome was excessive measures against some individuals who were merely present at the protest or did not participate in any violence.

Despite reservations about the fund’s creation process, it is not considered illegal or impeachable in my view. These settlement funds have historically been left to the discretion of the Justice Department, and previous administrations have entered into substantial settlements with politically aligned groups.

However, the election in the 10th District may offer insight into a more significant question than the prospect of another impeachment frenzy in Congress.

The crucial question is whether Goldman and similar candidates can secure another term solely based on generating outrage. The outcome will soon reveal if Goldman’s “let them eat impeachments” platform can overcome the more fundamental, bread-and-butter policies advocated by Lander or New York Democrat Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

NY DEM WOULDN’T BACK MAMDANI FOR MAYOR — NOW MAMDANI IS BACKING HIS CHALLENGER

It is not that anger has lost its appeal, but the focus has shifted as socialism gains traction within the Democratic Party, particularly in New York.

In this prevailing “eat-the-rich” atmosphere, Goldman is not a natural fit for contemporary Democratic politics. While not a “one percenter” himself, he is perceived by the wealthy elite as privileged and entitled.

As highlighted by Lander during his campaign, Goldman inherited his substantial wealth as an heir to the Levi Strauss family and possesses a net worth exceeding $200 million. He reportedly owns at least three luxury homes in Atlantic Beach on Long Island, Manhattan, and Water Mill in the Hamptons.

MAMDANI’S WALL STREET COURTSHIP SPARKS CRITICISM OF ANTI-BILLIONAIRE AGENDA

He appears to embody the very type of super-wealthy individual denounced by New York Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who argued that one “just can’t earn” a billion dollars. In Goldman’s case, he was born into such wealth. Goldman is not the adversary, but rather the embodiment of the socialist threat.

To be fair to Goldman, he has not attempted to present himself as an average person with shared life experiences. Instead, he has established himself within the political establishment as someone willing to enthusiastically engage in actions that alienate others.

When attacks on ICE personnel escalated significantly, including incidents broadcast on television, Goldman denied witnessing examples of such increasing assaults.

When evidence emerged of alleged influence peddling by then-President Joe Biden, it was Goldman who dismissed the allegations, maintaining that they were merely honest businessmen profiting from their work.

When substantial evidence indicated the Biden administration was orchestrating a widespread censorship system, Goldman downplayed these concerns.

When other Democrats criticized the Biden administration’s seizure of phone records belonging to members of Congress, Goldman was quick to minimize the attack on the legislative branch.

When the administration sought to investigate individuals involved in burning Teslas and dealerships during protests, Goldman denounced it as a “political weaponization” of the legal system.

Lander continues to criticize Goldman regarding his inherited wealth and his substantial personal financial contributions to the campaign. Despite unfavorable polling, Goldman has outspent Lander, pledging to match every donated dollar with his own funds.

This race is shaping up as a definitive contest between the socialist wing, represented by Mamdani and Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders with Lander, and the establishment, represented by Goldman.

Nevertheless, Goldman serves as an example of how the impeachment frenzy is likely to persist as politicians seek new targets to gain favor with voters.

On May 21, Democrat Representative Steve Cohen announced his intention to file “frivolous articles of impeachment” against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts for “compromising the credibility of the court.”

This might not be sufficient for Dan Goldman, who could find himself as the latest establishment figure to fall victim to the very political forces they hoped would maintain their power.
