SouthernWorldwide.com – Representative Terri Sewell, a Democrat from Alabama, has strongly criticized Republican efforts to investigate a Democratic fundraising organization, labeling the current fraud inquiry as the latest instance of Republican retaliation against Black women in positions of power.
Sewell stated on Wednesday morning that Donald Trump’s Department of Justice has repeatedly harassed Black women with unfounded lawsuits.
Sewell’s remarks come as Republican lawmakers are examining ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising and campaign organization, along with its CEO and president, Regina Wallace-Jones. The scrutiny is focused on allegations of potentially accepting illegal donations.
Specifically, House Republicans are requesting ActBlue to provide international communications. They are investigating whether the organization intentionally misled lawmakers and evaded subpoenas to conceal vulnerabilities in its screening processes for identifying and rejecting illicit overseas donations.
This review by lawmakers is occurring concurrently with a White House request in April for an investigation into the group.
The White House stated in a press release that there is evidence suggesting foreign nationals are attempting to exploit online fundraising platforms to unduly influence American elections.
Wallace-Jones has dismissed the investigation as baseless, asserting that ActBlue employs rigorous scrutiny in its donation processing.
Among the safeguards in place, Wallace-Jones mentioned that the organization requires Card Verification Values (CVVs) for credit card donations. It also utilizes IP addresses, a form of digital identification, to detect foreign-sourced contributions, implements an industry-standard Address Verification System (AVS), and conducts manual reviews of donations.
To Sewell, the investigation into ActBlue and Wallace-Jones is tainted by other investigations targeting Black women who have previously opposed Trump.
Sewell elaborated that this investigation is merely another example of Republicans and President Trump leveraging their official power to harass and intimidate anyone who dares to challenge him. She further claimed that the Trump Department of Justice has used its authority to intimidate and victimize minority communities, particularly Black Americans.
Sewell reminded the public of the harassment faced by Federal Reserve Board of Governors member Lisa Cook, New York Attorney General Tish James, and fellow Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, citing these as similar cases.
“It is not surprising that this Republican-led committee is now attacking ActBlue and its CEO, Ms. Wallace-Jones,” Sewell concluded.
