SouthernWorldwide.com – Houston Astros’ star slugger Yordan Álvarez delivered a performance for the ages in the very first inning of their recent game.
In the Astros’ thrilling 10-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday at Kauffman Stadium, Álvarez achieved an extraordinary feat by hitting both a home run and a grand slam within the opening inning. This remarkable accomplishment places him among an elite group, as he is now only the eighth player in Major League Baseball history to record a multi-run home run and a grand slam in the same inning, according to Sportradar.
Álvarez’s initial blast came against Royals’ starting pitcher Luinder Avila. He connected with an 84 mph curveball, sending it to the opposite field a remarkable 368 feet over the left-field wall for a two-run home run, giving the Astros an early 2-0 lead.
Following Álvarez’s impressive hit, first baseman Christian Walker continued the offensive onslaught with a home run of his own, marking back-to-back first-inning jacks for the Astros. The inning appeared to be winding down after Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve made consecutive outs. However, the Astros managed to orchestrate an impressive two-out rally.
Joey Loperfido drew a walk, and both Cam Smith and Taylor Trammell followed with singles. Loperfido was then able to score on Trammell’s single, extending the Astros’ lead to 4-0. Christian Vásquez and Jeremy Peña both walked, successfully loading the bases. Smith then crossed home plate on a passed ball, further increasing the score to 5-0.
With the bases loaded and Álvarez due up for his second plate appearance of the inning, Royals manager Matt Quatraro made the decision to remove Avila from the game. Mason Black entered the game and delivered an 85 mph sweeper to Álvarez, who promptly hit it over the centerfield wall for a grand slam. This monumental hit propelled the Astros to a commanding 9-0 lead.
The scoring in the first inning was not yet complete. The Royals mounted a response, scoring five runs of their own in the bottom of the first. While they continued to chip away at the deficit throughout the game, it ultimately proved insufficient to overcome the Astros’ explosive offensive performance in the opening frame.
Álvarez concluded the game with an impressive stat line, going 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBIs. His two home runs also moved him into a tie with Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead in home runs, with 24 apiece.
Álvarez is now the 63rd player in major league history to hit two home runs in a single inning. He is also the first Houston player to achieve this feat since Jeff Bagwell did so on June 24, 1994. Furthermore, he is the first player to accomplish this since Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz hit two home runs in the first inning on August 12, 2008.
The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the premier hitters in the American League and is considered a strong contender for the MVP award. In 70 games played this season, he boasts a .321 batting average with 24 home runs and 54 RBIs, leading the American League in the latter category. He also tops the American League in OPS and intentional walks, underscoring his significant impact at the plate.
