SouthernWorldwide.com – Australia’s World Cup manager, Tony Popovic, voiced his displeasure with the referee’s performance following his team’s significant loss to the U.S. men’s national team.

The Australian coach stated that the referee “did not have his best day” during the match.

This sentiment came after the U.S. secured a 2-0 victory in Seattle on Friday.

A particularly contentious moment occurred during the game when the U.S. appeared to score their second goal. The play was initially disallowed for offside.

However, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review led to the decision being overturned, and the goal was ultimately allowed to stand.

Popovic was observed approaching the German match official, Felix Zwayer, with evident urgency after the game concluded.

Tensions escalated late in the match, culminating in a physical altercation. Australia’s Harry Souttar was seen grabbing the U.S. player Folarin Balogun in a move described by commentators as a “rear naked choke.”

Zwayer intervened to restore order, issuing yellow cards to Balogun, Souttar, and Australia’s Jacob Italiano.

In total, Australia received four yellow cards, while the U.S. incurred three.

The U.S. scored their first goal in the 43rd minute following a free kick. Alex Freeman, son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, headed the ball into the net.

The Australian team protested the goal, citing potential goalkeeper impediment or an offside call. Despite the protests, the VAR review upheld the decision.

Adding to the drama, the referee, Felix Zwayer, experienced a cramp towards the end of the match.

The 45-year-old official required assistance from both Folarin Balogun and Australia’s Aiden O’Neill, who helped stretch his leg after Zwayer fell to the ground.

Despite his criticisms of the officiating, Popovic acknowledged the performance of the American team.

He admitted that his players appeared “sluggish” during the game.

“I don’t know if it’s the occasion, but we looked sluggish, heavy-legged,” Popovic stated to reporters.

“They won every duel, they won every second ball, and when you do that, it makes it very difficult to gain any momentum. And then we conceded two soft goals,” he added.

Popovic also commented on the atmosphere created by the home crowd.

“When you think, you know, this noise here — host nation — I think the players show how good they are in the second half, but obviously at this level, you can’t give away that much in the first,” he said.

With their 2-0 record, the United States currently leads Group D with six points.

Australia remains in second place with three points.

Paraguay and Turkey, who are yet to secure any points, will face each other to determine the group’s further standings.

The U.S. will secure a Group D victory and a more favorable draw in the Round of 32 if Paraguay either wins or draws against Turkey in their upcoming match.
