The exposure is linked to a traveler diagnosed with measles who arrived in the area earlier this month.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is actively investigating the confirmed measles case. The infected traveler was on Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884, which landed on June 11. Crucially, the individual was considered infectious during their time in Los Angeles County, raising concerns about potential transmission to others at LAX and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel.
This incident brings the total number of measles infections reported in Los Angeles County for the year to six. Health authorities are particularly vigilant as the summer travel season intensifies. This period often sees an increase in both domestic and international travel, especially with Los Angeles set to host events for the FIFA World Cup, which could further elevate the risk of exposure.
Individuals who were present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on June 11 are considered potentially exposed. Additionally, a potential exposure site has been identified at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel, located at 5711 W. Century Blvd. The timeframe for this potential exposure at the hotel is between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on the same day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is collaborating with local health departments to identify and notify passengers who were seated in close proximity to the infected traveler on the international flight. This targeted approach aims to ensure those most at risk are informed promptly.
Health officials emphasize that individuals who were at either the airport terminal or the hotel during the specified times could develop measles symptoms. The incubation period for measles ranges from seven to 21 days after exposure. Therefore, the last day for monitoring symptoms for this specific exposure event is July 2.
