SouthernWorldwide.com – The Philadelphia Phillies’ resurgence following the departure of manager Rob Thomson has been marked by a historic performance from two of their star players.
Kyle Schwarber powered the offense with three home runs, including two in a single inning, while Bryce Harper achieved a rare cycle, adding another significant accomplishment to his illustrious career.
This offensive onslaught led the Phillies to a dominant 15-3 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday, extending their strong run and showcasing a signature performance from two of baseball’s most recognizable figures.
Schwarber’s first home run of the game traveled an impressive 456 feet. His second blast in the third inning, off Mets reliever Cionel Pérez, was measured at 457 feet.
He concluded his remarkable night with a two-run homer in the seventh inning. This performance brought Schwarber’s major league-leading home run total to 28 and marked the fifth time in his career he has hit three home runs in a single game.
Adding to the Phillies’ success, pitcher Cristopher Sanchez delivered a strong outing, allowing only one earned run over six innings. This performance lowered his earned run average to an exceptional 1.80.
Sanchez’s outing extended his streak of allowing two earned runs or fewer to 23 consecutive starts at Citizens Bank Park. This is the second-longest such streak by any pitcher at the same ballpark in Major League Baseball history since 1913. He trails only Jacob deGrom, who had 24 such starts at Citi Field for the Mets between September 9, 2019, and August 31, 2022.
Schwarber’s achievement of hitting multiple home runs in an inning places him in elite company. He is the 67th player in MLB history and the second player this season to accomplish this feat, following Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros on June 12.
Within the Phillies franchise, Schwarber is the fourth player to hit two home runs in a single inning. He joins Trea Turner (August 19, 2023), Von Hayes (June 11, 1985), and Andy Seminick (June 2, 1949) on this list.
Meanwhile, Bryce Harper contributed significantly to the Phillies’ offensive explosion. He hit a solo home run in the first inning, his 16th of the season. Harper also recorded a double and a single in the third inning.
His defining moment came in the fifth inning when he hit a two-run triple into the gap in left-center field. This hit completed the cycle for Harper, marking the first time in his career he has achieved this milestone and the 11th cycle in the history of the Phillies franchise.
The Phillies and the Mets are scheduled to conclude their three-game series on Sunday night. The first pitch for the final game is set for 7:20 p.m. Eastern Time.
