SouthernWorldwide.com – Controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has expressed his strong support for two far-left candidates running for Congress in New York City, asserting that their potential victories would significantly advance the country’s trajectory towards socialism.
Piker stated at a Brooklyn rally that while he once believed the nation was distant from socialist ideals, the current moment presents an unprecedented opportunity. This rally was held for candidates endorsed by the New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, ahead of the state’s primary election on June 23.
The candidates leading the DSA-backed slate are State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez and activist Darializa Avila Chevalier. Piker lauded them as pivotal figures in the socialist movement, emphasizing the importance of seizing this opportunity through disciplined organizing.
Both Valdez and Avila Chevalier advocate for policies such as abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), increasing taxes on the wealthy, and promoting the Palestinian cause in Congress. Their potential victories in their respective deep-blue districts would likely strengthen the far-left contingent within the Democratic caucus.
Piker highlighted the significant ideological representation at such a crucial level, noting the substantial power associated with a congressional seat. He expressed his honor in being joined by Avila Chevalier on stage, with Valdez humorously referring to a cardboard cutout of her fellow candidate. Valdez also expressed pride in being part of a slate with Avila Chevalier and other socialist comrades.
Valdez is running for the seat being vacated by retiring Representative Nydia Velazquez, in a district that encompasses progressive areas in Queens and Brooklyn. Meanwhile, Avila Chevalier is challenging incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in a district covering Upper Manhattan and the West Bronx.
This progressive duo has garnered support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Justice Democrats, the same group that supported Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s successful House campaign in 2018.
Avila Chevalier has faced controversy for since-deleted social media posts where she made statements questioning the existence of Israel, expressed support for open borders, and claimed that all deportations are wrong. These remarks were initially reported by CNN.
Additionally, Avila Chevalier has drawn scrutiny for past comments, including calling former President Joe Biden “a rapist” and expressing strong negative sentiments towards Kamala Harris in 2021, following comments made by the former Vice President regarding illegal border crossings.
Piker predicted that a wave of socialist victories in New York City would soon overshadow the significance of Mamdani’s mayoral win from the previous year. He believes that by the end of the midterm elections, the impact of Mamdani’s win will seem minor compared to the number of socialist candidates elected to legislative offices across New York City and the state.
He referred to these candidates as “comrades” and “fighters” for the cause. The rally took place as Piker, who has previously faced significant backlash for controversial remarks about the 9/11 attacks and Hamas, has been actively campaigning with and interviewing socialist candidates nationwide.
While some allies of Piker, such as former Ocasio-Cortez chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti, have lost their primary bids, the streamer did celebrate a notable victory with progressive surgeon Adam Hamawy’s win in a Democratic-leaning New Jersey House seat primary.
