SouthernWorldwide.com – The Obama Presidential Center is set to honor the memory of Tafari Campbell, a cherished family friend and former personal chef to the Obama family, by featuring a comfort-food restaurant within its new establishment.
This initiative aims to commemorate Campbell, who was an award-winning member of the White House culinary team and a beloved personal chef to the Obamas. He tragically passed away in 2023, as announced by the Obama Foundation in a press release on Monday.
Campbell, aged 45, lost his life in July 2023 while paddleboarding on the Edgartown Great Pond, located near the former president’s residence in Martha’s Vineyard. Authorities reported that he was not wearing a life vest at the time of the incident.
The Obama family has expressed their deep affection for Campbell, describing him as an integral part of their family.
The press release further elaborated on Campbell’s character, noting his warm, fun-loving, and humble spirit. It highlighted how he utilized his exceptional culinary talents and passion for food to bring happiness and foster connections among people. A painting of Campbell by Kate Capshaw will be displayed in the restaurant.
The restaurant, to be named Tafari’s Kitchen, will showcase dishes inspired by the personal narratives of the Obama family. An example of this is “Mrs. Robinson’s Red Rice,” which is derived from the family recipe of Michelle Obama’s late mother, Marian Robinson.
The culinary direction for the menu will be overseen by Chicago-based chef Cliff Rome, in collaboration with Bon Appétit Management.
Campbell’s career in the White House began during the George W. Bush administration, where he served as a chef. He continued his role throughout the Obama presidency, during which his friendship with the 44th president blossomed.
He eventually became Obama’s personal chef, departing from the White House at the conclusion of the administration in 2017.
During the investigation into the accident, a paddleboarder who was with Campbell recounted witnessing him lose his balance and fall into the water while standing on his paddleboard.
The Obamas shared a heartfelt statement at the time of his passing, recalling their initial meeting with Campbell when he was a talented and passionate sous chef at the White House. They remembered him as a warm, exceptionally kind person who significantly brightened their lives.
The statement continued, explaining that they had asked Tafari to continue with them after leaving the White House, an offer he graciously accepted. He remained a part of their lives thereafter, and his absence has left them heartbroken.
The Obama Presidential Center is slated for a grand opening on June 19, following more than a decade of development. The project has encountered scrutiny regarding its design, cost, and the financial implications for taxpayers.
