SouthernWorldwide.com – A devastating fire swept through a popular resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, claiming the life of at least one Italian tourist and injuring several others. The blaze, which occurred in the Caribbean resort town of Bayahibe, led to the evacuation of 1,690 tourists.
The deceased has been identified as 46-year-old Italian national Francesca Valentino. She was staying at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel when the incident took place. This information was confirmed by the Dominican Republic’s Directorate of Out-of-Hospital Emergency Services (DAEH).
In addition to the fatality, at least nine other individuals sustained injuries. Three of these injured individuals required transport to medical facilities located off-site, according to a statement released by the DAEH.
Local authorities reported that a significant evacuation effort was undertaken, with 1,690 tourists being safely moved from the affected resort area. The Associated Press cited local authorities in their reporting of the evacuation numbers.
Aerial footage captured the intensity of the fire, with thick smoke billowing from numerous beachside structures. Large plumes of gray smoke were visible against the clear blue sky, casting dark shadows over the turquoise waters of the beach.
The rapid spread of the fire has been attributed to specific structural elements. Preliminary observations suggest that the use of flammable materials, particularly palm in parts of the roof structures, combined with prevailing wind conditions, contributed to the swift progression of the blaze.
Guests who were evacuated from the affected hotel were relocated to other accommodations. Many were moved to neighboring hotels, including the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, which is operated by the same company that manages the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel. Reports indicate that the Palace hotel did not suffer any damage.
Despite the significant fire at one resort, tourist activities in Bayahibe and the surrounding regions have reportedly continued without interruption. The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) issued a statement assuring that activities remain unaffected and are proceeding safely and normally.
Images and videos documenting the aftermath of the fire reveal the extent of the destruction. Some footage shows a drone actively spraying water onto a severely damaged and charred block of buildings. The structures continued to smolder even after the main fire appeared to be under control.
