SouthernWorldwide.com – As the globe buzzes with World Cup fervor, the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) embarks on a significant journey, aiming for a strong showing on home soil.

While soccer may not yet rival the nation’s most popular sports, a palpable sense of patriotism and fervent support for the USMNT is anticipated when the tournament kicks off on June 12 against Paraguay in Inglewood, California.

This sentiment is echoed by legendary NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski. Despite admitting to being a novice in a sport he never played growing up, Gronkowski declares himself “Team USA all the way” as the team prepares for the prestigious tournament.

Gronkowski acknowledges that a World Cup title for the USMNT would be a significant upset. However, his perspective on the sport mirrors that of many Americans: a deep love for their country and a desire to see the Stars and Stripes perform exceptionally well.

In his role on Tubi’s “The Other Football,” alongside fellow NFL star Jameis Winston, Gronkowski has been diligently expanding his understanding of soccer and gearing up for the World Cup.

“I think it’s great for America to learn the game of soccer,” Gronkowski shared about the show. “We have referees and players come on. They’re teaching us the game, and we’re asking questions because America is currently behind in soccer. There’s no doubt about that. It’s fantastic for the sport that the World Cup is being held here, as the entire world is familiar with soccer, its rules, and its players. A good portion of the USA is now learning about soccer, and the sport is expanding.”

“I’m learning so much and I’m really enjoying it.”

Growing up, Gronkowski and his brothers were involved in multiple sports, but soccer was not part of their athletic regimen in West New York. Nevertheless, Gronkowski holds immense respect for the dedication and skill of elite soccer players who will be on display over the next month.

“The cardiovascular fitness and the physical condition they maintain are absolutely incredible,” he explained. “I just never played it growing up. I don’t think I would have lasted very long. I’m more of a short-burst athlete – 40 yards. Then, I need a little break. If I had to play for that long, I don’t think I would have survived on a soccer field. I truly admire their athleticism. I wish I had played a bit, as my footwork for football and basketball would have been even more phenomenal and precise. They are complete athletes, and I respect what they do. I’m learning more and more about the game, and that’s the great thing about the World Cup being here.”

Gronkowski and Winston are not only delving into the rules of the game but also grasping the expanded FIFA format that will debut this week. This year’s tournament will feature 48 teams, an increase from the usual 32. The format dictates that two teams from each of the 12 groups of four will advance to the knockout stages, along with the eight best third-placed teams.

Gronkowski is eagerly anticipating cheering for the U.S. team. While he views winning the entire tournament as a long shot, he has set a clear benchmark for success.

“If we can advance past the group stage and into the knockout rounds, and at least win one of those games to reach the Round of 16, I think that would be a victory,” he stated. “That would be akin to the USA winning the World Cup. It’s not winning it all, but it would highlight how incredibly special it would be if we reached that stage.”

The USMNT is scheduled to face Paraguay on June 12, followed by matches against Australia on June 19 and Türkiye on June 25, concluding their group stage play.

Much like many other fans tuning in to support their country and embrace their patriotism, Gronkowski now possesses enough fundamental knowledge to enthusiastically root for a successful U.S. campaign.
