Deisy Tovar De Hernandez was reportedly at Hotel Eduards in La Guaira, Venezuela, alongside many family members of players from the La Guaira Delfines. They were present as the team prepared for a game against the Aragua Tigres in a Mexican baseball league contest, according to the New York Post.
Following the game’s suspension, Hernandez and his teammates immediately returned to the hotel. Hernandez himself has a notable career, having played seven seasons in Major League Baseball for teams including the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants.
Venezuela was severely impacted by a series of powerful earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 back-to-back. These seismic events caused widespread destruction across the nation.
Reports indicate that over 1,400 individuals have lost their lives as a result of the earthquakes. Additionally, a staggering 68,900 people are reported missing, highlighting the immense scale of the disaster.
The aftermath has been marked by desperate search and rescue efforts. One witness, Mileidy Romero, described the grim scene in Caraballeda, stating, “There’s a pile of bodies over there from last night. Newborn babies.”
Romero expressed frustration with the slow pace of rescue operations, adding, “At 8 p.m. (yesterday) there were people alive down there, and they haven’t bothered to rescue them. We’ve located several bodies, and they haven’t helped us recover them either. What are they waiting for?”
The natural disaster first struck on Thursday, and search efforts have been ongoing since then, with communities working tirelessly to find survivors and recover the deceased amidst the extensive damage.
