SouthernWorldwide.com – The American Century Championship is a premier event where notable personalities from various fields converge on the golf course for a highly anticipated tournament.
The picturesque Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe serves as the backdrop for this significant celebrity golf showcase. The tournament is scheduled to commence on July 10 and will conclude on July 12.
Distinguishing itself from traditional stroke play, the American Century Championship employs a Modified Stableford scoring system. This unique format awards points to players based on their performance on each hole, rather than simply counting the total number of strokes taken.
Under this system, an albatross is recognized with 10 points, a hole-in-one earns eight points, an eagle is valued at six points, and a birdie grants three points. A par is worth one point, while a bogey yields no points. Any score of two over par or worse results in a deduction of minus-two points.
In the previous year, former NHL star Joe Pavelski emerged victorious, accumulating an impressive 73 points. World Series champion John Smoltz secured the second position with 64 points, country music artist Jake Owen finished third with 62 points, former USMNT soccer player Taylor Twellman placed fourth with 61 points, and Golden State Warriors legend Steph Curry rounded out the top five with 58 points.
Smoltz reflected on his past slow starts, attributing them to a cautious approach and emphasizing the critical role of sinking birdie putts.
“You get three times the value for a birdie. So, like last year, I think I made seven or eight birdies the last round to finish second. Couldn’t chase down Pavelski, but I’m like, ‘Where has that been? Where’s those birdies in the first round?'” Smoltz explained.
LPGA legend Annika Sörenstam concurred with Smoltz’s assessment regarding the necessity of adopting a more aggressive strategy due to the scoring system.
“Different format than I’m used to. I mean, as far as you know, my professional career, we played stroke play for four days. Consistency was really the key. Now, it’s about getting points, and you get points by being more aggressive here. It rewards birdies and eagles. I think I got to really try to be a little bit more aggressive, which is maybe not my nature when it comes to golf.”
Among the leading contenders are Smoltz, Sörenstam, Owen, Pavelski, Curry, former NFL star Adam Thielen, and Los Angeles Lakers player Austin Reaves. While the golf competition is a significant draw for many celebrities, a considerable number also expressed their appreciation for the tournament’s overall atmosphere.
“They make you feel like you’re on the tour for one week.”
This marks the 37th iteration of the American Century Championship, and Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann has participated in 36 of these events. He noted that he was once a 2-handicap golfer but now plays to a nine, attributing the change to a decrease in his driving distance.
Theismann described the event as unmissable, not only for the golf but also for the extensive networking opportunities it provides.
The 76-year-old shared that he enjoys interacting with other participants on the driving range. He specifically mentioned conversations with Jerry Rice, Tony Romo, and Miles Teller, humorously referring to himself as a “fanboy” of Teller.
Theismann revealed that “Top Gun: Maverick” holds the distinction of being his all-time favorite film.
ESPN broadcaster Jay Bilas recounted being invited to the tournament approximately six or seven years ago, likening the experience to a PGA Tour player receiving an invitation to the Masters.
“It’s just a thrill. And it’s equally thrilling once you’re there cause it’s a beautiful setting in Lake Tahoe at the Edgewood Resort. The weather’s always spectacular. Seventy thousand people are there in shorts and sundresses and just enjoying seeing some of their favorite celebs.”
Bilas expressed his enjoyment of competing in the tournament, but he highlighted the atmosphere as the element that truly sets it apart. He attributed the welcoming environment and the creation of a familial atmosphere to CEO Jonathan Thomas.
NFL great Patrick Peterson observed that the event has undergone significant evolution over the years and is now an occasion that his entire family enjoys.
NFL legend Jerome Bettis stated that the American Century Championship provides him with a camaraderie reminiscent of a locker room, an experience he no longer encounters in his retired status.
“I think the favorite part is really getting to chop it up with the athletes because, obviously, being retired, you don’t get the chance to do that anymore. And, so, when you do get a chance to kind of rib guys and have fun with guys like that locker room experience again, it’s really fun and exhilarating,” Bettis remarked.
The tournament has successfully raised over $8 million for various regional and national charitable causes. American Century Investments contributes 40% of its profits to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research and actively promotes fundraising at the tournament to encourage direct donations to Stowers annually.
