SouthernWorldwide.com – Tom Kim secured a significant victory at the Genesis Scottish Open, ending a nearly three-year drought on the PGA Tour with a stellar final round performance.
Fans had anticipated a surge of wins from the young talent after his third PGA Tour victory in October 2023 at the Shriners Children’s Open. However, he had not returned to the winner’s circle since that event.
That changed on Sunday. The 24-year-old South Korean golfer shot a remarkable 64, tying for the lowest round of the day, to claim his first PGA Tour title in almost three years.
Kim demonstrated a strong performance throughout the week at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. He opened with a five-under 65 in the first round and followed it up with a 66 in the second, placing him in a tie for the lead at the halfway mark with Rory McIlroy and Jordan Smith.
The third round saw a shift in the standings, with McIlroy and Smith encountering difficulties due to fog delays, scoring 73 and 72 respectively. Meanwhile, Kim maintained his momentum with another under-par round of 68. The weekend schedule was impacted by fog, causing the third round to extend into Sunday morning before the final round could commence.
Entering the final round, Kim was trailing Matt Fitzpatrick by one shot. However, the 24-year-old quickly erased the deficit, carding birdies on three of his first seven holes.
Min Woo Lee mounted a late challenge, narrowing Kim’s lead to a single shot with only a few holes remaining. Kim responded with an exceptional approach shot on the par-4 16th, setting up his sixth birdie of the day and effectively putting the victory out of reach for the rest of the field.
This triumph arrives at a crucial moment for Kim. After participating in every major championship from 2023 to 2025, he missed qualification for both the 2026 Masters and PGA Championship. However, his impressive third-place finish at the U.S. Open has now secured his spot in the 2027 U.S. Open.
The victory at the Genesis Scottish Open also guarantees Kim a berth in both the Masters and the PGA Championship next season, alleviating any concerns about qualification.
Furthermore, this win provides Kim with significant momentum heading into the 2026 Open Championship. He finished tied for second in the 2023 Open but missed the cut in both 2024 and 2025. His current form suggests his game is in a much stronger position compared to the previous two seasons.
This year, Kim has made the cut in 15 out of 17 events he has competed in. In addition to his Scottish Open victory, his third-place finish at the U.S. Open serves as a potent reminder of the immense talent he possesses.
Kim first achieved PGA Tour success at the age of 20, winning his first two events. This accomplishment made him the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 to secure two victories before turning 21.
His third win at age 21 appeared to set him on a clear path to PGA Tour stardom. However, like many young golfers, Kim experienced a challenging period following his October 2023 victory at the Shriners. In 2024 and 2025 combined, he recorded only three top-10 finishes, with no victories and no top-25 finishes in any of the eight major championships (despite achieving top-10 finishes in both the 2023 U.S. Open and Open Championship).
It is now a pertinent question whether this difficult stretch is fully behind Kim, who has faced consistency issues since his breakout in 2022.
His first opportunity to demonstrate that this week’s performance was not an anomaly will be at Royal Birkdale for the 2026 Open Championship, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday.
