SouthernWorldwide.com – South African authorities recently conducted a high-risk operation, involving the aerial transport of a large crocodile believed to be responsible for the disappearance of a local resident.
The operation was initiated following the vanishing of a 59-year-old businessman from Gauteng last month. Local media outlet Smile FM identified the missing individual as Gabriel Batista, proprietor of the Border Country Inn, situated a short distance from the Komati River.
A specialized task force successfully located the reptile on Saturday along the Komati River. The crocodile was subsequently euthanized and removed from the area. Investigations revealed the presence of human remains within its digestive system.
The dramatic rescue mission was documented and has circulated widely on social media, depicting personnel hoisting the substantial crocodile from the water via helicopter.
According to police reports, the businessman went missing in late last month after his Ford Ranger became stranded at a flooded river crossing in an area known for its crocodile population.
State media SABCNews reported that the vehicle was swept away as the businessman attempted to cross the bridge.
Following an extensive search that lasted a week, the team identified a large crocodile in the vicinity that they suspected had attacked and consumed the victim.
Officials who had been observing the reptile for several days noted that it exhibited signs of a recent meal, including extended periods of inactivity, according to South African outlet ENCA.

SAPS Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter recounted that the crocodile was observed approximately 150 meters from where the victim was believed to have been washed off the bridge. He added that the reptile remained in the same location and did not move when a helicopter flew overhead.
Potgieter explained that crocodiles, after consuming a large meal, tend to become less active and seek sunlight to aid their digestion.
After obtaining the necessary permissions, authorities proceeded to euthanize the animal. Potgieter described the operation as being conducted under “extremely dangerous conditions,” as he was lowered by helicopter into the crocodile-infested waters.
The crocodile was secured with a rope, lifted from the water, and then transported by air, as confirmed by SAPS.
During the examination of the crocodile, officials reportedly discovered human remains along with six pairs of sandals in its stomach, SABC News reported.
The recovered remains have been submitted for DNA testing to definitively identify the victim.
It is currently unknown if the discovered shoes are connected to any other missing persons or residents in the surrounding area.
