SouthernWorldwide.com – Virginia’s U.S. Senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, have expressed their reactions following the Virginia Supreme Court’s decision to halt a newly drawn congressional map. Senator Warner described the ruling as “outrageous,” while Senator Kaine encouraged Democratic candidates to focus on winning elections despite the setback.
Senator Warner conveyed his disappointment with the court’s decision.
The court’s ruling stated that the redistricting process did not adhere to the requirements of Virginia’s constitutional amendment. This development thwarts a plan that Democrats had hoped would lead to them securing several seats currently held by Republicans, as both parties vie for control of the House of Representatives.
The amendment, which was ratified in 2020, introduced more stringent criteria for the creation and approval of congressional maps. A significant aspect of this amendment, which the court highlighted, includes limitations on the extent to which political considerations can influence the drawing of district boundaries.
Senator Warner emphasized that he would not question the will of the majority of Virginians who voted in favor of the redistricting plan.
Democratic lawmakers had intended to target four districts currently held by Republicans under the proposed map. This plan, approved by voters in May, was subsequently overturned by the court. The proposal aimed to alter the state’s House map in a manner favorable to Democrats in anticipation of the midterm elections.
These targeted districts were considered pivotal for the Democratic Party’s strategy to gain a stronger foothold in Virginia. While the state leans Democratic overall, it remains a competitive battleground for federal races.
Senator Kaine offered his perspective, stating, “What we need to do now is what we did last November and just go win a whole lot of seats on the maps we didn’t draw.”
Kaine’s response reflects the Democratic Party’s approach in Virginia amidst the fallout from the redistricting decision, as both major parties contend for control of the House in the upcoming November midterms.
He did not directly answer the question about the court’s ruling but instead drew attention to the strength of his party’s candidates and their capacity to compete effectively in crucial races leading up to the election.
“Everything about the candidates who are in the races and the dynamic that they’re feeling tells me we can do that, so that’s what I’m focused on now,” he stated.
Republicans have voiced criticism of the redistricting effort, characterizing it as an attempt by Democrats to unfairly influence the electoral map. Conversely, Democrats have pointed to similar redistricting actions in states led by Republicans as part of a wider national dispute over congressional district boundaries.
In a separate statement, Senator Kaine accused Republicans of manipulating district lines through “backroom deals.” He also expressed disapproval of the Virginia Supreme Court for raising concerns about the referendum after “three million Virginians cast their ballots.”
“It sure as heck seems like there are one set of rules for Democrats and another set of rules for Republicans,” Senator Warner remarked.

With the proposed congressional map now blocked, both political parties are expected to concentrate their efforts on key competitive districts within Virginia that could ultimately determine which party gains control of the House of Representatives.
