SouthernWorldwide.com – Senator Pete Ricketts, a Republican, has taken a significant step towards securing a full six-year term in the U.S. Senate by winning the renomination in Nebraska’s primary election, a state that leans Republican.

Ricketts, who was initially appointed to the Senate in 2023 to succeed Ben Sasse, and subsequently won a special election in 2024 to complete the remaining two years of Sasse’s term, emerged victorious over four other Republican primary challengers on Tuesday, according to reports from the Associated Press.

The Republican senator will now advance to the general election in the autumn, where he is anticipated to face a competitive race against independent candidate Dan Osborn. Osborn, an industrial mechanic and military veteran, had previously posed a challenge to Republican Senator Deb Fischer during her 2024 re-election campaign.

The primary election took place with less than six months remaining until the midterm elections. During this crucial period, Republicans are striving to maintain their narrow majorities in both the House and the Senate, while Democrats are hoping for a “blue wave” to help them regain political standing.

Although the Nebraska Democratic Party has expressed its support for Osborn in the general election, the primary saw community college instructor Cindy Burbank and pastor Bill Forbes competing for the Democratic nomination. Both candidates filed at the last minute.

Some Nebraska Democrats have suggested that Forbes entered the race specifically to ensure a Democratic candidate would appear on the fall ballot, with the intention of siphoning votes away from Osborn and thereby aiding Ricketts. Forbes has denied these allegations.

Burbank, on the other hand, stated that her decision to enter the race was to prevent Forbes from appearing on the ballot in November.

Senator Ricketts is the eldest son of Joe Ricketts, the founder of TD Ameritrade, and is a part-owner of the Major League Baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, along with other family members.

Ricketts previously served as the governor of Nebraska, winning elections in 2014 and 2018. Just one week after concluding his second term as governor, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate by his successor, Republican Jim Pillen.

Leading nonpartisan political analysts currently assess the Senate general election showdown in Nebraska as likely to result in a Republican victory.

The Republican Party currently holds a majority in the Senate, with 53 seats compared to the Democrats’ 47.
