SouthernWorldwide.com – Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are engaged in a heated debate over President Donald Trump’s proposal to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax. This discussion comes as fuel prices surge past $4 per gallon, exacerbated by ongoing conflict with Iran.
Democrats are vocally urging the President to de-escalate the situation with Iran, believing this is the key to bringing down gas prices. Republicans, meanwhile, appear divided on the effectiveness and merits of the proposed tax holiday.
“He must bring this conflict to an end if he desires a reduction in gas prices,” stated Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut. “And he needs to cease this war and stop pursuing other superficial solutions.”
“Why doesn’t he simply end the war with Iran, which is an unlawful conflict, and thereby resolve these issues?” questioned Senator Mazie Hirono, a Democrat from Hawaii. “He did not obtain authorization for it. The responsibility lies with President Trump. And the increase in gasoline prices, along with everything else, is on his shoulders.”
These comments from lawmakers followed President Trump’s endorsement on Monday of a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax. This move was prompted by escalating tensions with Iran, which have driven fuel prices higher across the nation.
According to AAA, average gas prices have climbed to $4.51 per gallon, and diesel prices have reached $5.66 as of Wednesday. This significant increase is a major concern for consumers.
“We are keen on maintaining low costs,” commented Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska. “Elevated gas prices increase the cost of groceries and other essentials. Therefore, I believe this is a matter worthy of consideration, and I am open to it.”
A suspension of the federal gas tax would potentially reduce the price of gasoline by 18.4 cents per gallon and diesel by 24.4 cents per gallon.
Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, introduced legislation on Monday to suspend the federal gas tax, following President Trump’s support for the idea. Hawley’s proposed “Gas Tax Suspension Act” aims to provide relief at the pump for a minimum of 90 days, with the possibility of an additional 90-day extension if prices remain high.

Support for suspending the gas tax has surfaced from members of both parties. However, some lawmakers have put forth alternative strategies to combat the rising cost of gasoline.
“I believe that year-round E-15 is a more effective solution,” stated Senator Roger Marshall, a Republican from Kansas. “Allowing E-15 year-round could reduce gas prices by approximately 30 to 40 cents per gallon. If you factor in our credit card rewards, that could further decrease the price by another dime to 15 cents per gallon. Consequently, I think these are likely two superior approaches to address the issue.”
E-15 is a more affordable gasoline blend that contains ethanol. It is currently prohibited from being sold nationwide during the summer months due to pollution regulations set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Some Republicans, like Senator Marshall, contend that year-round access to E-15 would be a more impactful method for lowering gas prices compared to a suspension of the gas tax.
While some lawmakers are focused on reducing fuel costs, others argue that the United States should maintain or even intensify pressure on Iran, despite the resulting increase in prices.
“Let’s definitively address Iran, or at least the IRGC, once and for all,” urged Representative Bacon. “The Iranian people are admirable, but their government is our adversary. They have been the most ruthless enemy we have encountered over the past four decades.”
“They should be subjected to severe measures,” he added.
Representative Bacon’s remarks reflect the views of a segment of Republicans who believe that the surge in gas prices is a direct consequence of confronting Iran. They caution that reducing this pressure could entail much greater risks.
“A nuclear-armed Iran poses a significant threat to America and the entire region,” stated Representative Bacon, emphasizing the geopolitical implications.
