SouthernWorldwide.com – A recent CBS News poll indicates significant public concern and frustration regarding the U.S. economy, with many Americans expressing stress and uncertainty about their financial situations.

Overall sentiment towards the economy has declined, reaching lows not seen since 2023. A substantial three-quarters of respondents feel their incomes are not keeping pace with the rising cost of inflation.

The economic outlook is described as “uncertain” by many, reflecting both immediate and long-term worries. This uncertainty is partly fueled by concerns over gas prices, which are increasingly impacting households.

Furthermore, there is a lack of clarity regarding the ongoing situation in Iran and its daily developments in the Strait of Hormuz. This geopolitical instability adds to the general feeling of economic unease.

On a broader political front, President Trump’s economic approach has drawn considerable frustration. Neither the Republican nor the Democratic party is viewed positively by a majority for their efforts to alleviate the cost of living.

Adding to these concerns, a growing number of Americans worry about the impact of artificial intelligence on job security, fearing that AI might lead to widespread job displacement.

A significant portion of the population also feels that economic opportunities are diminishing compared to the generation of their parents.

The conflict in Iran is identified as a key factor contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. economy. Many Americans feel they lack a clear understanding of the daily events unfolding in the Strait of Hormuz, which is directly affecting gas prices.

So far, the majority of Americans do not believe that the conflict has benefited U.S. economic interests. While perceptions of military success are somewhat higher, many remain hesitant to judge the long-term implications.

There is a mixed outlook on who currently holds the advantage in the conflict, with a notable segment of the population believing neither side has a clear upper hand.

President Trump is facing political repercussions for the current economic climate. A significant two-thirds of the country believes his policies are negatively impacting the economy, at least in the short term.

While some within his administration advocate for patience, there is limited optimism that his policies will yield positive long-term results. This sentiment is reflected in the predominantly “frustrated” or “angry” feelings Americans express about the administration’s economic strategy.

Consequently, the President’s approval ratings for handling the economy and inflation continue to decline. This trend is particularly evident among Republicans, who, despite generally favorable views on other issues, have shown a decrease in approval for his handling of inflation since the escalation of the Iran conflict and the subsequent rise in oil prices.

Within the Republican party, a minority expressing negative views on inflation cite “frustration” rather than “anger” regarding the administration’s economic policies. A considerable gap exists between the high approval ratings Republicans give the President on issues like immigration and his overall performance, compared to his ratings on inflation.

The President’s overall approval rating has also seen a dip, reaching its lowest point during his second term.

On the political front, many Americans do not see a viable economic solution from the Democratic party either. Neither party is perceived by a majority as effectively addressing the cost of living, although Democrats are given a slight edge in this regard.

Despite the challenges faced by President Trump, the Democrats’ approach to economic policy is not viewed as significantly superior. A substantial one-third of respondents believe neither party has an effective economic strategy, or they are uncertain about it.

Looking ahead, a considerable amount of economic uncertainty persists. Most Americans anticipate difficulties in finding desirable employment opportunities.

A widespread concern among the public is the potential for artificial intelligence to displace human workers, leading to job losses.

The general outlook for the U.S. economy is leaning towards pessimism, with a majority expecting either a recession or a period of economic slowdown.

These sentiments are framed against an economic backdrop that most people describe as “uncertain.” More individuals perceive the economy as “unfair” rather than “fair.”

This prevailing pessimism about the economy is contributing to a sense of diminished opportunities, particularly among Americans under the age of fifty, who feel their prospects are worse than those of their parents’ generation.

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,064 U.S. adults interviewed between May 13-15, 2026. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote. The margin of error is ±2.7 points.
