SouthernWorldwide.com – WNBA broadcaster Kate Scott has publicly defended Caitlin Clark against critics focusing on her turnover rate, especially as the Indiana Fever navigated the early stages of the 2026 season.
Clark experienced a high turnover count in her initial two games, averaging approximately five turnovers per game. This period followed two injuries that significantly impacted her second season in the WNBA. In her third game, she recorded four turnovers in a loss against the Washington Mystics.
During the Fever’s game against the Seattle Storm on Sunday, Scott addressed the criticism. This came after commentator LaChina Robinson highlighted Clark’s significant contribution to the Fever’s points total, noting she was responsible for 38 points with under 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
In that particular game, Clark had five turnovers. However, she also demonstrated strong offensive performance, shooting 5-of-10 from the field, making all nine of her free-throw attempts, and dishing out 10 assists.

“I think that’s worth mentioning, LaChina, because we all read the comments, right? We see that some folks have a problem with how much Caitlin turns the ball over – they’re always looking for something,” Scott stated. She then shared her research comparing Clark’s stats to prominent players in the NBA.
“So, I looked things up, just compared to the MNBA, the leaders in assists, Nikola Jokic, about 10 assists per game, four turnovers a game. Cade Cunningham, about 9.5 assists per game, four turnovers a game.”
“So, calm down everybody. … What are people stirring up? Yeah, because she holds the basketball for a majority of the 44 minutes. Welcome to the sport of basketball. OK, I’m off the soapbox now.”
While Clark’s turnover numbers have been a point of discussion, it is notable that she has not led the league in turnovers since entering the WNBA. Currently, the league leader in turnovers per game is Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese, who is averaging 5.3 turnovers across three games. Minnesota Lynx forward Natasha Howard is also averaging five turnovers per game in four games played.
The Indiana Fever are scheduled to play the Portland Fire on Tuesday night.
