SouthernWorldwide.com – A progressive state legislator who is a contender for Michigan’s next U.S. senator has expressed an openness to the idea of an Iron Dome system for Palestinians.

State Senator Mallory McMorrow, a Democrat from Michigan, made this noteworthy statement during a recent interview with pro-Palestinian podcasters Matt Bernstein and Emma Vigeland. This was first reported by Jewish Insider.

“I don’t believe anyone should have to live with the fear of being bombed or killed,” McMorrow stated when the podcast hosts questioned her about her support for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. She continued, “I would explore ways to support defensive systems for Palestinians. How would we support defensive systems for Lebanese citizens?”

Her spokesperson reiterated that her primary focus remains on ending the current conflict and achieving lasting peace in the region.

During the interview, McMorrow did not mention Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran that launches unguided missiles towards Israel from Lebanon.

When Vigeland seemingly sarcastically suggested that Palestinians could have access to Iron Dome technology, McMorrow responded with enthusiasm, saying, “Let’s have that conversation.”

As Bernstein, one of the hosts, audibly groaned and continued to press McMorrow to reject her support for Israel’s defensive weapons, she appeared to reinforce her stance.

“I mean, the horror of living in constant fear of being bombed,” McMorrow said. “Let’s work towards ending the violence, period.”

McMorrow later expressed her hope that missile defense systems would eventually become obsolete for everyone.

“I would love to reach a point where it’s not needed, period, for anyone,” she told the podcasters, referring to the Iron Dome.

She also informed the podcasters that she would have supported a resolution proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, which sought to block certain weapons sales to Israel. This measure did not pass in April due to strong opposition from Senate Republicans and a small number of pro-Israel Democrats.

McMorrow’s statements come at a time when she is competing for the Democratic nomination in a highly contested three-way primary. This race involves significant constituencies from Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities.

Other candidates in the August primary include Representative Haley Stevens, an establishment Democrat endorsed by pro-Israel groups, and Abdul El-Sayed, who is backed by Bernie Sanders.

The Senate hopeful did not appear to challenge the podcasters when they criticized “Zionist indoctrination” or characterized Israel as an “apartheid state.”

Throughout the interview, McMorrow attempted to position herself as a unifying candidate who could prevent the Democratic coalition from fracturing over the Israel-Palestine issue.

“If we allow it to divide us, we hand a victory to Mike Rogers,” McMorrow stated, referring to the likely Republican nominee who has the president’s endorsement. “Trump wins.”

Earlier this year, El-Sayed faced criticism after leaked audio, first reported by The Washington Free Beacon, revealed the far-left candidate expressing concern about constituents who were reportedly upset by the assassination of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike.
