SouthernWorldwide.com – President Donald Trump has achieved another significant victory in his ongoing campaign against Republican critics, demonstrating his strong influence within the Republican Party following a series of primary election successes in recent weeks.
Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL and Kentucky farmer endorsed by Trump, has defeated Representative Thomas Massie, a long-standing opponent of the president, as reported by The Associated Press. This win is a major achievement for Trump’s political strategy and for pro-Israel advocacy groups that invested heavily in an effort to unseat the incumbent congressman.
In the final days leading up to the primary, Trump publicly criticized Massie in highly personal terms, while also highlighting his endorsement of Gallrein, whom he had personally recruited for the race.
The president described Massie, who has often opposed key elements of his legislative agenda, as the “worst ‘Republican’ congressman in history” on the day before the primary.
“My opponent is running against President Trump and the agenda put forth by the Republican Party,” Gallrein stated, emphasizing the political stakes of the contest.
However, Massie countered that Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein was not an insurmountable obstacle, citing strong support from the conservative grassroots for his independent political stance.
“We have been able to match them and go head-to-head on television using grassroots donors, and it has truly energized the nation,” Massie remarked.
Massie also suggested that the decision by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to campaign for Gallrein on Monday indicated that Trump’s political operation believed Massie was leading in the polls.
“They wouldn’t be sending the Secretary of War to my congressional district if I weren’t,” he added, implying a sign of concern from the Trump campaign.
Trump had previously campaigned directly against Massie in his predominantly Republican district in March, labeling him as “disloyal” to both the Republican Party and the United States.
Massie, known for his libertarian-leaning views, was among a small group of Republicans who voted against the president’s significant tax cut and spending legislation, citing concerns about its impact on budget deficits. He also played a key role in legislative efforts that compelled the Department of Justice to release the Epstein files, despite strong objections from the White House, which later supported the initiative.
More recently, Massie has become one of the most vocal Republican critics of Trump’s military actions concerning Iran, and has frequently voted with Democrats to limit the scope of the military campaign.
This policy position, along with his votes against military aid to Israel and resolutions condemning antisemitism, prompted pro-Israel donors aligned with Trump to actively participate in the campaign to unseat Massie.
The Kentucky primary contest follows a series of high-profile Republican primary battles where Trump’s endorsements have proven to be highly influential.
The president celebrated the defeat of five Indiana GOP lawmakers earlier in May, who had opposed efforts to redraw the state’s congressional map to favor Republicans in the upcoming November elections. Another victory for Trump occurred on Saturday when Senator Bill Cassidy, R-La., failed to advance to the runoff election for his third Senate term.
Notably, Senator Cassidy had voted to convict Trump following his second impeachment trial in January 2021.

Massie had successfully defeated primary challengers in both 2022 and 2024. However, Gallrein represented the most significant challenge to the incumbent since Massie was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2012.
