SouthernWorldwide.com – A tourist excursion on the icy outskirts of Siberia’s Lake Baikal tragically concluded on Tuesday when a hovercraft carrying travelers capsized in the frigid waters, resulting in five fatalities and initiating a significant rescue operation, as reported by Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations and cited by local media outlets Interfax and Komsomolskaya Pravda.
Emergency officials stated that the vessel, a Sever-750 airboat designed for travel over both ice and water, capsized just offshore with 18 individuals on board.
Rescue teams successfully retrieved 13 survivors from the lake, including a child, while five other individuals were declared deceased at the scene.
EMERCOM confirmed in a statement to Interfax, “According to updated information, there were 18 people on board the hovercraft. Thirteen people, including a child, were rescued. Unfortunately, five people died.”
The group was participating in a guided tour near Lake Baikal, recognized as the world’s deepest freshwater lake and a highly popular tourist destination in Siberia, according to Russian media reports.
Most of the passengers are believed to be visitors from Moscow, as indicated by the outlets.
Authorities have not yet ascertained the cause of the incident. However, initial reports suggest that the hovercraft may have lost stability after entering an area of thin ice near the shoreline.
Investigators are also examining whether overcrowding contributed to the incident, local outlets reported.
Russian media indicated that the hovercraft was designed to carry a maximum of 10 passengers but was transporting 18 people along with significant equipment at the time of the accident.

Komsomolskaya Pravda reported that the captain steered the hovercraft onto the ice and jumped into the water shortly before it overturned.
One survivor sustained a leg injury and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, according to local media reports.
The hovercraft tragedy highlights the rapidly changing weather conditions, dangerous waves, and strong winds associated with Lake Baikal, as indicated by reports.
A local tour operator informed the Russian outlet Komsomolskaya Pravda that the model involved in the crash was not well-suited for the lake’s harsh conditions.
“These boats are known to be unstable on open water,” the operator reportedly stated, adding that the vessel is more commonly utilized on rivers and calmer surfaces.

Investigators from Russia’s transport prosecutor’s office and the country’s Investigative Committee have initiated an inquiry into the crash as officials work to determine if safety violations played a role in the fatal accident, several reports stated.
The Investigative Committee and the Buryat Transport Prosecutor’s Office (BTPO) are conducting an investigation into the hovercraft accident, according to Russian media outlets.
