Union Boss Wins Heated Dem Primary in Key PA Swing District

SouthernWorldwide.com – In a closely watched Democratic primary in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, a key swing district, Bob Brooks has emerged as the projected winner for the party’s nomination.

The primary race highlighted internal divisions within the Democratic Party. Bob Brooks, a firefighters union boss, secured endorsements from both Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Bernie Sanders. He faced competition from former federal prosecutor Ryan Crosswell, Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure, and Carol Obando-Derstine, who was endorsed by EMILY’s List and was considered the preferred candidate of the district’s previous Democratic representative, former Rep. Susan Wild.

Brooks’ campaign benefited from significant backing from prominent figures, including Governor Shapiro, Senator Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, and leading state Democrats like House Majority Leader Matt Bradford and Senator Vincent Hughes.

The mayor of Allentown, the district’s largest city and the third-largest in Pennsylvania, also endorsed Brooks.

Lamont McClure, the only candidate currently holding local office, did not immediately gain significant momentum against Brooks.

Brooks managed to navigate controversy surrounding resurfaced social media posts that expressed more moderate or conservative viewpoints. One such post used an offensive term to describe former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in relation to his criticism of law enforcement during the Black Lives Matter era.

Ryan Crosswell, although born in Schuylkill County, spent many years working for the Department of Justice in Washington. He was among several prosecutors who resigned in protest when the Trump administration dropped a federal investigation into former New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The district’s core area, comprising Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton, locally known as “A.B.E.” or “The Valley,” has a strong blue-collar heritage. This history was famously captured in Billy Joel’s song about Bethlehem Steel and the closure of factories. The now-dilapidated SteelStacks serve as a reminder of the past and a focal point for politicians advocating for future development.

The “next” phase for the region has involved a surge in new warehouses and businesses focused on interstate commerce, alongside growth in the tech sector.

In the northern part of the district, agricultural land is increasingly being converted into housing and warehouses. This development has caused concern among many long-time residents. An influx of residents from higher-tax states like New Jersey and New York, coupled with evolving socioeconomic dynamics, has brought more liberal and progressive voters to a region historically rooted in agriculture and union labor, once characterized by “Reagan Democrat” voters.

The current boundaries of the district still reflect this contrast. As one travels further north, the area becomes more rural, agrarian, and forested, exhibiting more conservative leanings. Representative Wild faced criticism on two occasions for remarks perceived as disparaging towards the Trump-supporting segment of Carbon County, the only county entirely within the 7th Congressional District that voted for Mackenzie in 2024.

The Republican candidate, Representative Ryan Mackenzie, previously served as a state representative in western Lehigh County for many years. He narrowly defeated Wild by one percentage point in 2024.

Mackenzie has since received praise from former President Donald Trump and criticism from progressive groups, whose protesters have frequently demonstrated outside his office, sometimes obstructing traffic on Cedar Crest Boulevard in southwest Allentown.

With the Republican Party’s slim majority in the House at stake, it remains to be seen which party’s base will be sufficiently motivated to turn out for their candidate in this race, which is being closely monitored nationwide.
