SouthernWorldwide.com – Idaho Democrats have selected Terri Pickens, a small business owner and private practice attorney, as their candidate to challenge incumbent Republican Governor Brad Little in the upcoming November election.

Pickens emerged victorious in the state’s Democratic gubernatorial primary held on Tuesday, overcoming several other contenders. This marks a significant step in her campaign to unseat Governor Little, who is seeking his third term in office.

However, Pickens faces a considerable challenge. Idaho is a predominantly Republican state, and it has been 36 years since a Democratic governor was last elected. This historical trend presents an uphill battle for her campaign.

Election forecaster The Cook Political Report, known for its nonpartisan analysis, has categorized Governor Little’s re-election bid as “Solid Republican.” This rating indicates a strong likelihood of his victory based on current political indicators.

This is not Pickens’ first foray into statewide politics. In 2022, she ran as the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor. In that election, she lost by a substantial margin of 34 points to the Republican candidate, Scott Bedke. Bedke currently serves as the state’s lieutenant governor and is also seeking re-election.

Governor Little, who secured the Republican primary, has garnered the endorsement of President Donald Trump. His campaign is widely expected to perform strongly in the general election, building on his existing support base.

Adding another layer to the gubernatorial race, former Idaho Supreme Court Justice John Stegner has announced his intention to run as an independent candidate. Stegner aims to challenge Governor Little’s bid for a third term, offering an alternative to the established party candidates.

Governor Little, a rancher with prior experience in the state Senate and as lieutenant governor, has focused his platform on deregulation, increased funding for public education, and tax relief. These policies are central to his campaign for re-election.

He successfully navigated a competitive Republican primary, defeating a field of GOP candidates. Among those he faced was former police officer Mark Fitzpatrick, who positioned himself as a more conservative challenger from the right.

In recent legislative actions, Governor Little signed a law that imposes restrictions on transgender individuals using bathrooms that do not align with their biological sex. This Idaho legislation is noted for its stringency, as it extends its reach to private businesses in addition to public properties, making it one of the most comprehensive laws of its kind in the country.
