SouthernWorldwide.com – A devastating suicide bombing targeted a passenger train in Pakistan on Sunday morning, resulting in at least 23 fatalities and approximately 70 injuries.

The attack occurred in Quetta, the capital city of the southwestern province of Balochistan. An explosives-laden vehicle detonated near the railway tracks as a passenger train was passing by. The explosion was so powerful that it caused two train carriages to overturn and erupt into flames.

This region has a history of persistent, low-level insurgency. Separatist and militant groups have been active in Balochistan for a considerable period. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant separatist organization advocating for the province’s secession from Pakistan, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

The BLA stated that their target was a train carrying security personnel. Reports from The Times of India suggest that the train was transporting army personnel and their families. They were traveling from Quetta to Peshawar to observe the Eid holidays. The Associated Press (AP) also reported the BLA’s claim, specifying that the target was a train with security personnel. The area itself is known for a significant security presence.

The sheer force of the blast sent shockwaves throughout the vicinity. According to eyewitness accounts and images shared on social media, the explosion led to the overturning and subsequent fire of two train cars. Thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky, as reported by The AP. Additionally, nearby buildings sustained considerable damage, and over a dozen parked vehicles were affected by the blast.

Many of the injured were promptly transported to local hospitals. Doctors cited by The AP indicated that around 20 of the wounded were in critical condition, highlighting the severity of the injuries sustained.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vehemently condemned the attack, denouncing it as a “cowardly act of terrorism.” He assured that those responsible would be apprehended and brought to justice. The Prime Minister expressed his profound condolences to the families of the victims and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.

“I strongly condemn the heinous bomb explosion near Chaman Phatak, Quetta, which has resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives and left many others injured,” Sharif stated. “Such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan. We remain steadfast in our determination to eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

He further added, “I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the swift recovery of the injured. The entire nation stands in solidarity with the people of Balochistan in this hour of grief.”

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti pointed fingers at what he described as “Indian-sponsored proxies” aimed at destabilizing Pakistan. He alleged that these groups are behind the attack. India and Pakistan have a long-standing territorial dispute over Kashmir, with India consistently denying such accusations.

“The terrorists of Fitna Al-Hindustan are proving their savagery by targeting innocent civilians, women, and children,” Bugti declared, characterizing the group as originating from India. He emphasized that those responsible for shedding innocent blood would not be shown leniency.

“Let the enemy hear this: there will be no safe haven left for terrorists in Balochistan,” Bugti asserted. “We will hunt down the terrorists, their facilitators, and their masterminds one by one and bring them to justice, and this war will continue until the last terrorist is eliminated.”

The BLA has been increasingly executing large-scale suicide operations, with a focus on Pakistani security forces and infrastructure in Quetta, according to The Times of India. This incident follows a pattern of violence in the region.

In a tragic incident earlier in 2024, at least 26 individuals, including soldiers, were killed in a suicide bombing at a train station in Balochistan, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the province.
