SouthernWorldwide.com – Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed recently disclosed an incident where he smashed a vodka bottle in a Detroit liquor store following a comment about the length of his beard, a practice significant in some Muslim communities.

Speaking on the left-leaning YouTube show “Intellectually Petty,” El-Sayed recounted the encounter. A store employee questioned his religious affiliation and then commented on his beard being too short.

El-Sayed stated his response to the employee’s judgment. He then described retrieving a bottle of vodka, placing it on the counter, and when told he couldn’t purchase it, he retorted that the employee couldn’t sell it either before smashing the bottle on the floor and leaving.

This anecdote has become a talking point for some Republicans in the competitive Senate race.

Hunter Lovell, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee (RNC), suggested the incident indicates a readiness to resort to aggression over matters of faith.

Lovell criticized El-Sayed, implying he uses his religion to promote extremism and suggesting he has anger management issues unsuitable for the Senate.

When approached for comment on Lovell’s remarks, El-Sayed’s campaign did not specifically address the liquor store incident.

El-Sayed is currently engaged in a vigorous three-way Democratic primary contest for the seat being vacated by Senator Gary Peters.

Voters face a choice between El-Sayed, state legislator Mallory McMorrow, and Representative Haley Stevens, who leans more towards the establishment wing of the party.

El-Sayed has notably positioned himself as the most progressive candidate among the three.

His platform includes policies such as “Medicare for all,” free college education, and the dissolution of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

El-Sayed has also drawn criticism for his stance on the U.S. relationship with Israel, citing humanitarian concerns related to the conflict in Gaza.

Furthermore, he has faced scrutiny for appearing at an event with Hasan Piker, a media personality who has made controversial statements about Hamas and the September 11th attacks.

El-Sayed himself has affirmed his condemnation of all forms of religious violence.

Following an attack on a synagogue in Michigan in early 2026, El-Sayed characterized the event as an act of “terrorism.”

In a press release, El-Sayed stated his condemnation of the attack, emphasizing that there is never a justification for harming innocent people or places of worship.

The primary election for the Michigan Senate race is scheduled for August 4th.
