SouthernWorldwide.com – The situation outside Delaney Hall, a detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, has escalated into a significant ideological confrontation. During demonstrations on Saturday, far-left communist-socialist activists and supporters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) converged, transforming what began as a protest over facility conditions into a broader political spectacle.
The standoff commenced over a week ago. Detainees, identified as undocumented immigrants, penned an open letter alleging severe mistreatment. They claimed to be subjected to physical and psychological torture, and that they were being denied adequate medical care and sufficient food.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) swiftly denied these allegations. To counter the claims, the DHS released facility menus, asserting that detainees are provided three daily meals. These meals reportedly include options such as chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak, intended to demonstrate adequate sustenance.
Earlier in the week, the protests saw violent skirmishes. Federal agents were reportedly assaulted by agitators. In response to the escalating violence, Democrat Governor Mikie Sherrill ordered the New Jersey State Police to assume security responsibilities at the facility. Governor Sherrill stated this measure was necessary to protect the demonstrators from what she described as an “ICE surge.”
By Saturday morning, Delaney Hall had been transformed into a heavily fortified zone. Large orange plastic barricades and metal fencing surrounded the immigrant detention center, indicating a heightened security posture.
State officials have acknowledged that the chaos is being fueled by individuals from outside the local community. State Attorney General Jennifer Davenport confirmed that five of the six people arrested by state police during the week were not residents of New Jersey, suggesting that external instigators are driving the disruptions.
A crowd of approximately 200 anti-ICE demonstrators was the dominant presence on Saturday. This group was heavily comprised of individuals associated with far-left and socialist organizations. Their chants included “Stop ICE Gestapo! Communist revolution!” They were also seen distributing radical literature with slogans such as “LONG LIVE COMMUNISM!” and “NO PAPERS, NO BORDERS, NO BOSSES.”
Supporters of ICE also made an appearance at the protest on Saturday. This group included members of the far-right Proud Boys. They carried pro-ICE flags and brought provisions such as food and cases of water for law enforcement officers.
The arrival of the ICE supporters created a significant reaction within the much larger anti-ICE crowd. Far-left agitators immediately moved towards the barriers, shouting profanities. Their chants shifted to target the arriving group, with shouts of “Proud Boys go home.”
During a press conference held on Saturday afternoon, Governor Sherrill reiterated her concerns about the situation. She claimed that direct engagement with ICE “creates an incredibly dangerous situation.” Governor Sherrill also stated her refusal to “back down in fighting the Trump administration and the threats they’ve made.”
Governor Sherrill acknowledged that “national extremist groups” have infiltrated the protests, contributing to the chaos. She issued a warning to these out-of-state actors, stating that they are endangering the public and not assisting the detainees.
“You’re not helping detainee families, and you’re certainly not keeping New Jersey safe today,” the governor stated. She urged those protesting outside Delaney Hall to “bring the temperature down” so that focus can be placed on the detainees and their families. She also advised protesters to comply with lawful orders from local and state law enforcement, allowing community advocates and faith leaders to continue their work.

Governor Sherrill further mentioned that state health inspectors had recently been prevented from inspecting areas beyond the facility’s kitchen. She called on the Department of Homeland Security to cease pressuring detainees into signing deportation documents.
