SouthernWorldwide.com – A late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade in Rome was disrupted by a stampede of horses, reportedly triggered by unauthorized fireworks. The incident resulted in injuries to several soldiers and animals.
The chaotic event unfolded late Friday near the historic Baths of Caracalla. Mounted units from various Italian armed forces and law enforcement agencies were practicing for the June 2 national celebration when the disturbance occurred.
According to reports, approximately 35 horses broke free and galloped through the city streets. Video footage captured the startling scene, showing numerous horses running along Via Cristoforo Colombo, with onlookers filming the event.
A significant search and recovery operation for the escaped horses continued until dawn the following day. The last horse was reportedly found nearly nine miles away from the initial location.
The sudden fireworks, described as loud bangs, began just before 11:30 p.m. This unexpected noise caused panic among the ceremonial horses, many of which were under the care of Italy’s Army, Carabinieri paramilitary police, and state police.

At the time of the incident, some riders were on horseback, while others were leading the horses by hand. The startled animals managed to break free from their handlers.
During the ensuing chaos, a 22-year-old soldier sustained serious injuries, including broken ribs and a punctured lung. Officials have stated that his injuries are not life-threatening.
Reports indicate that at least 15 horses were also injured. Fortunately, none of the injured animals required euthanasia.
An Italian news outlet, ANSA, reported that three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman were among those injured in the stampede.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the ignition of the unauthorized fireworks near the parade rehearsal site.
The Rome Local Police Command confirmed that four traffic police officers were involved. These officers were reportedly in close proximity to the fireworks when the explosions occurred, according to ANSA.
One officer, identified as a 50-year-old who recently joined the force, allegedly set off a battery of fireworks approximately 200 yards from the horses. This action is believed to be the catalyst for the incident.
Witness statements and video evidence suggest a simultaneous occurrence of the fireworks exploding and the horses escaping their handlers.
Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis expressed his dismay, telling Corriere della Sera that the incident “discredits the image of the Corps and its officers.” His statement was reported by Reuters.
Commander De Sclavis further indicated that the agency would take “necessary measures” to ensure accountability for those responsible. ANSA reported these remarks.
“Last night’s events hit us like a tsunami,” he stated, conveying the significant impact of the incident.
