Marine Combat Veteran Bets Big on Hispanic Outreach to Flip House Seat

SouthernWorldwide.com – In the heart of New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, a marine combat veteran is placing a significant bet on his Hispanic heritage and military background to sway historically Democratic voters toward the Republican party in the upcoming elections.

Greg Cunningham believes his unique blend of experiences will resonate deeply with the Hispanic community in the district. He stated, “I connect with them on that level. They wanted somebody with law enforcement or military experience, which, you know, I have both.”

Cunningham further elaborated on his conviction, saying, “One of the reasons that I decided to run — that I feel so strongly about this is, you know, Hispanic culture is at its core a conservative culture.” This perspective underpins his strategy to appeal to a demographic that has traditionally leaned Democratic.

His campaign reflects a broader, ongoing effort by Republicans to win over minority voters, particularly in swing districts that could determine the balance of power in Congress. This strategy is especially relevant in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, currently represented by Democratic incumbent Gabe Vasquez.

The district presents an interesting political landscape. It is one of thirteen that voted for former President Donald Trump in 2024, yet it elected a Democratic representative. The Cook Political Report categorizes the district as “leaning” Democratic, with a rating of D+0, indicating a closely contested race.

Cunningham emerged as the Republican candidate after his sole primary challenger withdrew in April. He will be the first new GOP candidate presented to voters in this district since 2018, when former Rep. Yvette Herrell was the Republican nominee. Herrell last lost the seat in 2024 to Vasquez by a margin of 4.2%.

Cunningham is confident that his personal history and professional experience are perfectly aligned with the district’s challenges. His background includes service as a Marine reconnaissance veteran in combat, followed by a career in law enforcement with the Albuquerque Police Department.

During his time with the Albuquerque Police Department, he served in patrol and narcotics units, worked as a DEA task force officer on federal drug and cartel cases, and even operated in undercover roles before moving into private security. This extensive experience in law enforcement and combat operations is a cornerstone of his campaign.

Cunningham emphasized the distinctiveness of his candidacy compared to previous Republican contenders. He stated, “I love Yvette Herrell, but I am a different person in every way, shape, and form. And what I bring to CD2 and to this race is exactly what we need.”

He believes his background is particularly suited to addressing the persistent issues of crime and narcotics trafficking that plague the district. Cunningham pointed out that these problems continue despite efforts to curb illegal immigration.

“The human invasion portion of that equation is solved. The law enforcement, human trafficking, narcotics trafficking, all of those challenges are the same exact challenges that I faced when I worked down there 20 years ago. Nothing has changed,” Cunningham asserted.

Beyond his practical knowledge and experience in combating crime, Cunningham aims to connect with voters on a deeper, values-based level. He believes these values are fundamental to the Hispanic community.

“We value our families, we value our culture, we value our faith,” Cunningham explained. He continued, “And so, I think when you take Republican or Democrat, take the donkey or the elephant out of it, and you start speaking to people on a core level, who are you?”

He expressed a belief in shared aspirations across the political spectrum. “We all want the very same things,” he added, suggesting that common ground can be found by focusing on fundamental human desires and values.

New Mexico’s demographic makeup is significant to Cunningham’s strategy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the state is approximately 50% Hispanic, making this group a crucial voting bloc.

Similar to the challenges faced in other traditionally Democratic strongholds and competitive districts, Cunningham acknowledges that a significant part of his campaign will involve convincing voters that a Republican can indeed win and hold this seat.

“I just have to convince [New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District] why we can win this,” Cunningham concluded, highlighting the uphill battle and his determination to persuade constituents of his electability.
