SouthernWorldwide.com – In a stunning turn of events in Iowa’s Republican gubernatorial primary, Zach Lahn, backed by MAHA Action, has secured a victory over the Trump-endorsed incumbent, Representative Randy Feenstra.

Lahn, a farmer and businessman who ran on an “Iowa First” platform, managed to pull off a significant upset against Feenstra, who was widely considered the frontrunner in the race to succeed outgoing Republican Governor Kim Reynolds.

The primary saw Lahn competing against a field that included former state Representative Brad Sherman, former Iowa Department of Administrative Services Director Adam Steen, and state Representative Eddie Andrews. Lahn’s win positions him to advance to the November general election and contend for the governor’s office.

For Feenstra, the outcome represents a considerable setback. As the representative for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, he entered Election Day as the most recognizable Republican candidate. Feenstra boasted a strong congressional profile, a significant fundraising advantage, and endorsements from prominent Iowa Republicans, including former Governor Terry Branstad. The race also saw a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Reports indicated that Lahn held a lead of approximately 1,600 votes over Feenstra shortly after midnight Eastern Time, with 99% of the votes tallied, according to The Associated Press’ election tracker.

In his concession speech, Feenstra addressed his supporters, stating, “I just called Zach Lahn, and said, ‘Hey, you got to carry this torch. We got to keep this state red. You got to make sure you beat Rob Sand.’ And I’m all in to help him out.” This sentiment was captured in a video recording shared by Iowas News Now reporter Skylar Tallal.

President Trump had publicly endorsed Feenstra just days before the primary, describing him as “MAGA all the way” and offering his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” Feenstra’s campaign actively highlighted his alignment with the former president, emphasizing his support for Trump’s agenda on key issues such as border security, tax cuts, energy production, and agriculture.

Lahn, conversely, positioned himself as an outsider candidate. His campaign garnered support from MAHA Action, a political group associated with the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. Lahn’s campaign website outlined his identity as a father, farmer, and businessman committed to advancing an “Iowa First” agenda.

The gubernatorial race was opened following Governor Kim Reynolds’ announcement that she would not seek reelection, despite being eligible to run. This created Iowa’s first open gubernatorial contest since 2006. The Republican party has held the governor’s office in Iowa since 2011.

Lahn is now set to face Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand in the November general election. Sand, who is currently the sole Democratic statewide officeholder in Iowa, advanced through the Democratic primary unopposed. His political platform has largely focused on government accountability and anti-corruption efforts.

Initial assessments suggest that the general election could be highly competitive. The Cook Political Report adjusted its rating for the race from “Lean Republican” to “Toss Up” in April, while Inside Elections currently rates the contest as “Lean Republican.”

Should Sand emerge victorious in November, he would mark the first Democratic governor elected in Iowa since Chet Culver’s win in 2006.
