GOP Lawmaker Accuses Tlaib of Hezbollah Ties, House Floor Reacts

SouthernWorldwide.com – The House floor descended into pandemonium on Wednesday following an accusation by Republican Representative Max Miller of Ohio, who alleged that Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan had ties to terrorist organizations, including Hezbollah.

This heated exchange occurred during a contentious debate surrounding a resolution aimed at compelling President Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from Lebanon. Tlaib, a prominent progressive lawmaker and a member of “The Squad,” was expected to force a vote on this measure on Thursday. Her stated rationale was that the United States should not be involved in supporting Israel’s conflict in Lebanon.

Notably, Tlaib’s resolution did not explicitly mention Hezbollah, an organization designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. and identified as a proxy force of the Iranian regime. Republicans seized upon this omission, asserting that the resolution would inadvertently benefit Hezbollah and that its proponents were acting as the group’s “proxies.”

“Hezbollah is a terrorist organization… and its members are butchers that you like to hang out with to a certain extent,” Miller stated on the House floor Wednesday evening, directly referencing Tlaib.

When Tlaib responded with raised voices, Miller retorted, “Are we getting a little emotional?”

Tlaib then countered, “That is an attack on my character,” and formally requested that Representative Jay Obernolte of California, who was presiding, rule Miller’s remarks as out of order.

Obernolte ultimately decided to strike Miller’s words from the official record. This decision came after the House floor was effectively frozen for over an hour as lawmakers engaged in deliberation over the incident.

Following the ruling, Miller was prohibited from speaking on the House floor for the remainder of Wednesday.

Subsequently, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast of Florida delivered a statement on Miller’s behalf, asserting, “Yes, I said it. I own it, and I stand by it.”

Tlaib’s resolution, which targets U.S. military presence in Lebanon, is anticipated to face an uphill battle and likely fail on the House floor on Thursday, given the bipartisan opposition it has garnered. The measure is expected to create divisions within the Democratic party, and the stance of the House Democratic leadership on the vote remains uncertain.

Republican lawmakers have also characterized the resolution as “dangerous.” Their concerns stem from the potential impact it could have on U.S. military operations in the region, which include safeguarding the American embassy in Beirut and providing training to the Lebanese Armed Forces to counter Hezbollah.

When asked by Mast if she would support U.S. forces remaining in Lebanon to assist in training the Lebanese army to combat the terrorist group, Representative Delia Ramirez of Illinois, a co-sponsor of the resolution, did not provide a direct answer.

“He’s having a different debate here,” Ramirez insisted, deflecting the question.
