SouthernWorldwide.com – Two Major League Baseball players were forced to leave a divisional game on Thursday night following a frightening collision at first base.

The incident involved Ildemaro Vargas of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Max Muncy of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both players were sent to the ground after a forceful impact during a close play.

The collision occurred in the fifth inning when Muncy hit a ball down the line. Vargas, recognizing that his pitcher Ryne Nelson might not reach the base in time, rushed towards first base. Muncy managed to beat Vargas to the bag, but the two players collided violently and were thrown into the air.

For several minutes, both players remained on the field while medical trainers attended to them. The stadium fell into a hushed silence as the situation unfolded. Muncy was the first to rise and slowly made his way to the dugout. Vargas required assistance to get back on his feet before also heading to his dugout.

Muncy was reported to be experiencing shortness of breath. He underwent evaluation for a concussion but thankfully avoided one. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Muncy would not play on Friday against the Angels, which was already a scheduled day off for him. However, he might be available for games over the weekend.

Vargas sustained bruises along his entire left side, affecting his thigh, ribs, and neck. X-rays came back negative. He communicated to his manager, Torey Lovullo, that he would be ready to play on Friday if necessary.

Muncy spoke with reporters, stating that he was feeling a bit sore but expected to be alright. He expressed his concern for Vargas, mentioning that he had sent a message to him and hoped he was doing well and not too badly injured.

Muncy described the play as an unfortunate situation where neither player seemed to know how to avoid the collision. Vargas, speaking through an interpreter, conveyed that his entire body felt as if he had “run into a truck.”

Manager Torey Lovullo commented on the incident, noting that such collisions are unfortunately a part of baseball when players are hustling to make a play. He acknowledged that it was difficult to witness but was relieved that both players were able to leave the field.

The game marked the conclusion of a four-game series between the two teams in Arizona, which they had split. The Diamondbacks managed to secure a 3-2 victory in this game, salvaging the series despite the unsettling collision.
