SouthernWorldwide.com – Meta Platforms is launching a new initiative to train individuals for jobs in its data centers, offering a five-week course that culminates in a guaranteed skilled trade position.

The tech giant announced on Monday its commitment of $115 million to this program, named “America’s workforce academy.” This initiative is open to a wide range of individuals, including qualified veterans, those looking to change careers, and anyone interested in entering the skilled trades.

The program will initially be rolled out in Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas. Meta highlighted a significant national deficit in skilled tradespeople, such as fiber technicians, welders, plumbers, and electricians, who are crucial for the construction and maintenance of data centers.

Meta stated in a release that “Every graduate will leave with a verified, industry-standard credential in high-demand fields such as electrical work, mechanical systems and plumbing.” This aims to equip participants with recognized qualifications for immediate employment.

The rapid expansion of data centers is driven by the increasing demand for artificial intelligence development. According to Apollo Global Management, the United States currently hosts approximately 4,000 data centers, with an additional 3,000 either announced or under construction.

A 2025 report by the American Edge Project, a policy advocacy group supported by Meta, projects that these data centers will generate 4.7 million temporary construction jobs across the U.S. The report also anticipates that around 700,000 permanent jobs will be created to manage and operate these facilities.

However, this surge in data center construction has also faced public scrutiny in some communities. Concerns have been raised about the strain on local power grids, potential environmental impacts, and the extent to which these projects benefit local economies.
