Tunisia Parts Ways with Coach During World Cup Following Sweden Defeat

SouthernWorldwide.com – Tunisia’s men’s soccer team has made a swift coaching change mid-tournament, dismissing head coach Sabri Lamouchi following a significant opening match defeat.

The team suffered a heavy 5-1 loss against Sweden in their first game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday. This result appears to have had a profound impact on the squad and its leadership.

Just a day after the disappointing performance, on Monday, the Tunisian Football Federation announced the termination of Lamouchi’s contract. Hervé Renard has been appointed as the new head coach for the remainder of the World Cup.

The federation clarified that Renard’s initial deal will only cover the upcoming matches in the current tournament. Discussions for a longer-term contract will be held at a later stage, after the World Cup concludes.

Tunisia’s path forward in the tournament is now more challenging. They have two remaining group stage matches against Japan and the Netherlands.

The opening loss against Sweden, coupled with the 2-2 draw between Japan and the Netherlands, has placed Tunisia in a difficult position. If the World Cup were to end today, Japan would already qualify for the knockout stage based on their current standing.

Hervé Renard brings a wealth of experience as a World Cup coach to the Tunisian side. He previously managed Morocco in the 2018 World Cup and Saudi Arabia in the 2022 tournament.

Notably, Saudi Arabia achieved a historic upset in Qatar by defeating Argentina in a group stage match under Renard’s guidance. He also had a stint coaching the French women’s national team during the 2023 World Cup.

Sabri Lamouchi’s tenure as the coach of Tunisia was relatively short, as he had only been in the position since January of the same year.

This is not the first instance of Tunisia making a coaching change during a World Cup campaign. Historically, the team has made similar decisions in past tournaments.

In the 1998 World Cup, Tunisia parted ways with their coach Henryk Kasperczak. This decision came after the team experienced losses against England and Colombia in the group stage.

By the time Tunisia played their final group match against Romania, they were already out of contention for the next round.

On a different note, Spain experienced a notable coaching turnaround mid-tournament with a different outcome. In the 2018 World Cup, Spain dismissed Julen Lopetegui just two days before their opening match against Portugal.

Despite the late change, Spain managed to advance to the knockout stage of that tournament. However, their journey ended when they lost to Russia on penalties in the Round of 16.
