SouthernWorldwide.com – Democrat Maureen Galindo, a sex therapist from South Texas, has been defeated in her primary runoff election. This outcome follows significant backlash from within her own party for her controversial statements.

Galindo lost to Johnny Garcia, an official from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. The race was for a newly drawn congressional seat in Texas.

The district is currently represented by Rep. Gregorio Casar, a member of the “Squad.” However, Casar is running in a different, adjacent district. This has left the now more Republican-leaning seat open for contention.

The controversy surrounding Galindo escalated when she was accused of antisemitism. She had floated a plan to imprison “American Zionists” in an ICE detention center.

During the heated discussions, she pushed back against suggestions that she was advocating for an “internment camp.” This exchange drew widespread criticism.

Galindo had surprised many by securing a victory over Garcia in the initial March primary. This result necessitated the runoff election held recently.

Johnny Garcia, her opponent, had openly condemned Galindo’s remarks. He also partially attributed the increased visibility of Galindo’s name to Republican efforts.

Garcia is a native of San Antonio. His professional background includes service as a police deputy, a SWAT hostage negotiator, and a public information officer.

His campaign presented him as an “old-school Democrat.” He was widely seen as the more moderate candidate in the runoff contest.

The Republican primary for this seat also featured two candidates. One of them is reportedly a relative of Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz, who represents a nearby district.

Given the redrawing of the 35th Congressional District in favor of Republicans, many Democrats appeared to view Galindo’s candidacy as a significant liability.

Her rhetoric has been met with condemnation from various factions within the Democratic Party, even from its more progressive members.

Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, both prominent Democrats, publicly denounced Galindo’s statements. They emphasized that such language is unacceptable in American politics.

In a joint statement, Jeffries and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee stated that Galindo’s comments were “disqualifying.” They asserted that such views have no place within the Democratic Party.

They further elaborated that embracing and promoting a fringe candidate with antisemitic and dangerous rhetoric to achieve electoral victory is “beyond the pale.”

The statement concluded with a strong prediction that Texans would reject her at the ballot box, indicating a lack of faith in her appeal to voters.
