SouthernWorldwide.com – A drone strike on an apartment building in Romania, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), resulted in injuries and a fire on Friday, according to local authorities.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that the incident occurred concurrently with a Russian overnight drone attack targeting neighboring Ukraine, near the Romanian border.

The ministry elaborated that a drone had entered Romanian airspace, was detected by radar systems as it approached the southern part of the Galați municipality, and subsequently crashed onto the roof of a residential apartment building.

Romania, which is a member of both NATO and the European Union, has reported over two dozen instances of Russian drones breaching its airspace since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.

This particular incident on Friday marks the first time a drone has impacted a populated area within Romania, leading to casualties.

According to Romania’s state news agency, a woman and her child were hospitalized with minor injuries. Additionally, two other individuals received treatment at the scene for panic attacks.

In response to the event, Romania has formally requested enhanced anti-drone capabilities from NATO. The country has also characterized the drone’s flight path as a significant violation of international law, as reported by The Associated Press.

Romania’s emergency response agency confirmed that the drone struck the apartment building, causing an explosion and igniting a fire on the 10th floor.

The agency further stated that the drone’s entire explosive payload detonated upon impact.

Authorities reported that seventy residents were evacuated from the building. The fire has since been successfully contained.

The defense ministry announced that two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter were dispatched to monitor the Russian attack. The pilots were granted authorization to engage and shoot down any drones deemed to pose a threat.

This incident follows recent statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who earlier in the week emphasized his efforts to persuade the United States to supply additional Patriot air defense missiles to aid in countering Russian assaults.

He expressed concern that the delivery of these crucial weapons to Ukraine was falling perilously short, partly due to the strain on U.S. military resources and stockpiles caused by the conflict with Iran.

“I believe [the U.S.] must act quicker. We are being very persistent,” Zelenskyy told reporters during a visit to Sweden, highlighting Ukraine’s ongoing and determined plea for further support.
