Hochul: Stefanik Would Have Been a Stronger GOP Challenger

SouthernWorldwide.com – New York Governor Kathy Hochul has made a surprising statement, suggesting that Representative Elise Stefanik would have presented a more formidable challenge as a Republican opponent than the current gubernatorial candidate, Bruce Blakeman.

This remark, made during an interview with Newsday’s editorial board, came in response to a question about whether Stefanik, who had previously considered a gubernatorial run before deciding against it, would have been a stronger general election contender than Blakeman.

“Probably. I mean, Bruce is, you know, Bruce,” Hochul stated, implying that Blakeman’s challenge was less significant.

Hochul elaborated that Stefanik’s national recognition and profile would have altered the dynamics of the gubernatorial race. She pointed to Stefanik’s ability to generate substantial funds due to her broader national following.

“She had the ability to raise a lot of money” because of her national following, Hochul said. “It would have been a different race.”

Despite acknowledging Stefanik’s potential strength, Hochul expressed confidence in her own ability to win, even against the Republican congresswoman. “Our polling shows us beating her as well,” she added.

Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, responded sharply to Hochul’s comments. He accused the governor of attempting to divert attention from her own performance and record. Blakeman compared Hochul to the Disney villain Cruella de Vil, a strong criticism of her tenure.

The context of Stefanik’s potential candidacy is also tied to former President Donald Trump’s endorsements. Last December, Trump publicly supported Stefanik, calling her a “tremendous talent” and wishing her success, even as she was considering a run for governor. He later endorsed Blakeman after Stefanik decided not to enter the race.

Trump’s endorsement of Blakeman was seen as a significant factor in solidifying the Nassau County executive’s position as the Republican nominee. This election cycle has highlighted the former president’s influence within the Republican party primaries.

Governor Hochul is currently seeking her first full four-year term. She initially took office in 2021, succeeding former Governor Andrew Cuomo after his resignation.

In the 2022 gubernatorial election, Hochul secured a victory over Republican Lee Zeldin by approximately six percentage points. This win occurred despite Republicans achieving one of their strongest performances in a deeply Democratic state like New York in recent years.

Looking ahead to the current campaign, campaign finance filings are expected later this month. Hochul has consistently maintained a significant advantage in fundraising over Blakeman. Republicans are reportedly relying on public matching funds and increased outside spending to help close this financial gap as the election campaign intensifies.
