SouthernWorldwide.com – In Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, a region known for its support of Donald Trump, Democratic candidates vying to succeed retiring Representative Jared Golden are aligning themselves with controversial Senate candidate Graham Platner. This endorsement comes despite significant opposition from moderate factions within their own party.
Following the withdrawal of Governor Janet Mills from the Senate race in late April, the three leading Democratic contenders for the open House seat have publicly backed Platner, who is the presumed Democratic nominee. This support was declared ahead of the June 9 primary election.
In contrast to the candidates seeking to replace him, Representative Golden has not offered an endorsement for Platner. He has also indicated to the Portland Press Herald that he does not intend to become involved in the Senate race.
Maine State Auditor Matt Dunlap and former congressional aide Jordan Wood have explicitly endorsed Platner’s campaign. State Senator Joe Baldacci, a Democrat who enjoys establishment backing, also voiced support in a statement. His statement notably criticized former Governor Paul LePage, a Republican who is running unopposed for the GOP Senate nomination.
Despite the endorsements, the candidates have remained largely quiet regarding Platner’s controversial social media posts and the controversy surrounding his tattoo, which bears a resemblance to a Nazi symbol. These issues have ignited backlash from some elected Democrats.

This alignment with Platner could present further challenges for Democrats in their already difficult endeavor to retain the swing seat. The seat will be vacated by Golden, who secured re-election in 2024 by a narrow margin of fewer than 3,000 votes, despite the district’s Republican leanings.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has classified the open House race as “Likely Republican.” This assessment is attributed to the district’s rural character, its conservative voting patterns, and Golden’s decision not to seek re-election.
Matt Dunlap, who is positioning himself within the progressive wing of the contest, is slated to appear with Platner at a get-out-the-vote rally scheduled for next week. This event is being headlined by Representative Ro Khanna, a left-wing populist Democrat from California, who has endorsed both Dunlap and Platner.
“With Graham Platner now the clear choice, I am prepared to rally behind his candidacy,” Dunlap stated on social media. “He will be a phenomenal United States senator.”
Dunlap further commented, “He is the kind of leader Maine has been waiting for, as demonstrated by the strong support he has generated.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the campaign arm for House Republicans, plans to leverage the candidates’ associations with Platner. This strategy is particularly aimed at the 2nd Congressional District, which is considered one of the reddest districts currently held by a Democrat in the country.
The support from these Democratic candidates stands in sharp contrast to the reactions of centrist Democrats. Figures such as Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Representative Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts have strongly condemned Platner’s campaign.
Auchincloss, a Jewish Democrat, has asserted that Platner’s tattoo, which is linked to Nazism, and his public defenses of it are “personally disqualifying.”
Meanwhile, senior Democratic leaders in Washington have largely refrained from commenting on Platner’s various controversies or distancing themselves from the Senate hopeful. This silence has been noted by observers.
One unnamed source commented on the situation, stating, “The Maine race really demonstrates the civil war that’s happening within the Democratic Party, and there are a lot of Democrats, moderate Democrats like myself, who will not cry tears should we lose Maine. I mean, that would be a pickup to begin with.”
