SouthernWorldwide.com – A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday near the popular island resort of Rottnest Island in Western Australia, resulting in the death of a 38-year-old man following an attack by a large shark.

The fatal encounter occurred at Horseshoe Reef, a location situated approximately 19 miles west of Perth, shortly before 10 a.m. local time, according to reports from the police.

Witnesses and emergency services rushed to the man’s aid, bringing him back to shore. However, despite their efforts, he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for St. John WA Ambulance confirmed the details of the incident to People magazine, stating, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark.”

The spokesperson further elaborated on the rescue attempt: “The man was conveyed by vessel to shore, where he was met by St. John WA paramedics. Sadly, the man was unable to be revived.”

This unfortunate event marks the second fatal shark attack to occur in Australian waters this year, underscoring a concerning trend.

In response to the incident, Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development issued a statement urging the public to exercise “additional caution” when in the vicinity of Horseshoe Reef and surrounding areas, as reported by BBC News.

Authorities have indicated that the shark involved in the attack is believed to have been a great white, a species known for its size and predatory capabilities.

Visual documentation from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation depicted police presence at the scene, with a boat and rescue personnel visible, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

This incident follows another fatal shark attack earlier in the year. In January, a 12-year-old boy tragically died a week after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbor.

Furthermore, the New South Wales coast experienced a cluster of shark-related incidents within a short period. Three other individuals were attacked along the coast in non-fatal incidents over the same two days that the Sydney Harbor attack occurred.
