SouthernWorldwide.com – Manchester United has officially confirmed that Michael Carrick will remain as the club’s head coach on a permanent basis, signing a two-year contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2028.
The 44-year-old former midfielder was instrumental in stabilizing the team after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January. He successfully guided the club to secure qualification for a major European competition earlier than anticipated.
Carrick, who previously managed Middlesbrough, took over the reins on January 13 during a period of significant institutional change at the club.
He orchestrated a remarkable tactical turnaround at Old Trafford, leading the Red Devils to 11 victories in 16 matches. This impressive run secured them a guaranteed third-place finish in the league.
A thrilling victory against Nottingham Forest over the weekend mathematically sealed their return to Europe’s elite club competition. During Carrick’s brief tenure, United accumulated a league-high 36 points.

Reflecting on the significant responsibility of permanently managing his former club after five highly successful months in a temporary role, the multiple-time Premier League winner expressed immense pride.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Carrick stated: “From the moment I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.
“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here. Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honors again.”
The club’s leadership felt compelled to offer the legendary midfielder the permanent position after he swiftly restored a cohesive winning culture at Carrington.
Highlighting that the manager’s tactical vision perfectly aligns with the club’s historical identity, director of football Jason Wilcox added: “Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team.
“In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.
“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated. He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”
Carrick’s immediate focus will shift from short-term stability to the complex task of squad development as the summer transfer window approaches.
Having been nominated for the Premier League Manager of the Season award, he must now design a rigorous pre-season program. This program needs to be capable of supporting both a domestic title challenge and a demanding multi-front European campaign.
The administrative focus will now entirely shift to identifying elite summer transfer targets. The aim is to bolster squad depth before the pre-season calendar officially commences.
