Officials confirmed that approximately 100 monkeys managed to breach a section of the enclosure at the Lopburi Municipality Animal Nursery. These animals were under the care of local authorities, having been previously transferred from Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.
Fortunately, dedicated workers at the facility were able to prevent a much larger exodus, successfully keeping over 1,000 other monkeys contained within the nursery. The escaped animals, however, posed a significant challenge for the recapture teams.
The escape prompted an immediate and large-scale response. Provincial officials, wildlife experts, and municipal workers fanned out across nearby residential areas on Tuesday to track down the loose primates. The primary goal was to safely return the monkeys to their enclosure.
Authorities employed a variety of methods to coax the monkeys back. Food-baited cages were strategically placed in an attempt to lure the animals into a controlled environment. For some of the more elusive or dominant macaques, tranquilizer darts were necessary to safely subdue them before capture.
While the recapture efforts were underway, crews worked diligently to repair the damaged section of the enclosure. This was a crucial step to prevent any further breakouts and ensure the security of the remaining monkeys.
Lopburi Governor Weeraphong Ritrod assured the public that the damaged enclosure has since been repaired and reinforced. These measures are intended to significantly reduce the likelihood of future escapes.
Looking ahead, the governor revealed plans to construct a new, more robust enclosure. This future facility will feature a double-layer design specifically engineered to prevent the dominant monkeys from finding ways to break out.
The province is also taking steps to improve the welfare of the monkeys. A foundation is being established to help cover food costs and enhance the living conditions for the animals housed at the nursery.
Mayor Chamroen Salacheep suggested several potential reasons for the escape. He speculated that factors such as hunger, extreme heat, overcrowding, or the monkeys’ natural instinct to explore could have contributed to the breach.
The mayor extended his apologies to residents who were affected by the incident. He also urged anyone whose property may have sustained damage to report it to the authorities. This information will be used to assess the extent of the damage and determine what assistance can be provided.
Lopburi is widely recognized for its substantial population of free-roaming macaques. These monkeys have become a familiar, though sometimes problematic, presence in the region.
In recent years, the monkeys have posed challenges for both residents and local businesses due to property damage and instances of aggressive behavior. Authorities have been actively working to manage the monkey population through various initiatives, including sterilization programs and the relocation of some animals to dedicated, secure enclosures.
