Republicans Claim Democrats ‘Completely Stained’ by Platner Scandal Support

SouthernWorldwide.com – Graham Platner has withdrawn his name from the ballot, but the fallout from his controversial Senate campaign in Maine is providing Republicans with potent ammunition against Democrats in other critical midterm races.

Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters stated that Democrats “rolled in the mud with Platner,” and are now “completely stained by their association with this sick monster.” This statement came shortly after the Marine Corps veteran announced the suspension of his campaign.

Republicans are actively linking Platner to Democratic candidates in several House and Senate races, which are expected to significantly influence the midterm battle for control of Congress.

Platner, a populist Democrat who received backing from prominent national progressives like Senator Bernie Sanders last September, was challenging long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins in a high-stakes and costly race in Maine. This particular race is considered one of the key contests that will determine whether the GOP maintains its narrow Senate majority in the upcoming November elections.

Platner’s decision to exit the race followed a bombshell report released just two days prior, which detailed an allegation of rape from a former girlfriend. It was after this report that a chorus of calls from leading Democrats across the nation urged him to withdraw immediately.

However, Platner, a combat veteran and oyster farmer whose campaign had gained significant momentum and challenged the Democratic establishment, had already been facing intense scrutiny before his primary victory last month.

Inflammatory online comments made on a now-deleted Reddit account resurfaced, coinciding with revelations about a tattoo on his chest resembling a Nazi symbol, which had reportedly been covered up. Further reports emerged detailing sexually explicit messages exchanged between Platner and several women while he was married, preceding public accusations from ex-girlfriends regarding a history of rape fantasies, heavy drinking, and violent episodes.

Platner consistently denied the allegations of violence, attributing his tattoo and Reddit posts to actions taken by a younger, now-reformed individual. Addressing the most recent rape allegation, a visibly annoyed Platner asserted in his suspension video that “This is all false. The things that have been claimed did not happen. It is not real.”

Despite Platner’s denials, Republicans see a strategic advantage in leveraging his controversial past against Democrats in key races, particularly those who previously endorsed or defended him.

Gruters asserted that “Every Democrat that endorsed Graham Platner endorsed a rapist, and every Democrat that stayed silent was complicit.”

The GOP has specifically targeted Matt Dunlap, the Democratic nominee in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. This is a Democrat-controlled open seat in a predominantly rural district that President Donald Trump carried in the last three presidential elections, making it a prime target for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

Dunlap had endorsed Platner and appeared with him at a campaign event just days before Maine’s primary election on June 9.

NRCC Spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole criticized Dunlap, stating, “Out of touch freak Matt Dunlap might be okay with Nazi lovers and men who abuse women, but in November, he’ll see for himself that Mainers aren’t. Dunlap’s embrace of this vile human is disqualifying.”

On the same Monday that many Democrats were calling for Platner’s withdrawal, Dunlap issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations and calling for Platner to step aside to allow for a unified Democratic nominee for the general election.

In the neighboring battleground state of New Hampshire, the NRCC has also focused on Stefany Shaheen, a leading contender in the September primary for the state’s 1st Congressional District. This is another critical swing seat among the roughly two to three dozen races that will determine the GOP’s control of the House.

O’Toole argued that “Granite Staters will hold Shaheen accountable for her appalling judgment.”

While Shaheen did not endorse Platner, she did not explicitly condemn him until Monday, when she described the allegations as “extremely disturbing” and called for Platner to withdraw, stating, “I stand with the women who bravely came forward.”

The Pappas campaign countered by highlighting a statement from the NRCC that reads, “They have nothing to say about the twenty-eight women who have accused Trump of sexually abusing them. Stefany is going to keep taking on Donald Trump’s corrupt self-dealing and misogyny along with the hacks who keep enabling it.”

The winner of the congressional race in New Hampshire will succeed four-term Democratic Representative Chris Pappas, who is currently running for the Senate.

Former Republican Senator John E. Sununu, the leading GOP candidate for the Senate seat, criticized Pappas for his “failures… when it comes to Graham Platner.” This point was further emphasized by a piece in the New Hampshire Journal.

Pappas, who never endorsed Platner, also took to social media on Monday, declaring, “The allegations against Graham Platner are reprehensible, and he must step aside.”

The Pappas campaign further argued that Sununu, who has secured Trump’s endorsement, is hypocritical in his criticisms. “Donald Trump was found liable for sexual abuse, bragged about sexually harassing women and girls, has publicly defamed and demeaned survivors, and is mentioned in the Epstein files over 38,000 times — and John Sununu accepted Trump’s endorsement anyway,” stated Chris Pappas for Senate spokesperson Gates MacPherson. “Chris Pappas called on Platner to step aside immediately. John Sununu still stands with Donald Trump. They are not the same.”

The Senate contest in New Hampshire is one of approximately a dozen races that are anticipated to decide whether Republicans retain their majority in the chamber.

Democrats, however, question the potential effectiveness of a Republican strategy to use Platner as a political weapon against them in the upcoming elections.

A Democratic spokesperson, shifting the focus to economic issues, argued that voters are more concerned with “how Republicans broke their promise lower costs by passing a toxic agenda of tariffs, new wars, and devastating health care cuts. Meanwhile, Democrats are running on making life more affordable and rooting out corruption, and in November we’re going to win.”
