SouthernWorldwide.com – The New York Mets secured a dramatic victory over the New York Yankees in the first Subway Series of the season on Sunday afternoon.
The Mets clinched the win in the bottom of the 10th inning with one out and runners on first and third. Carson Benge hit a chopper over the head of Yankees reliever Tim Hill.
Yankees infielders Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann collided while attempting to field the ball, and neither could make the play. This allowed Marcus Semien to score the winning run, sealing a 7-6 victory for the Mets.
The Yankees had held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs and runners on base, Tyrone Taylor hit a game-tying home run to left field off David Bednar.
This was Taylor’s third home run of the season.
“I didn’t know if it was going to stay fair,” Taylor said post-game. “I kind of waited there to see if it would.”

The Yankees are heading into a challenging homestand after a difficult nine-game road trip, during which they went 2-7. They are set to face American League East rivals the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays.
“Guys are playing tough and making the plays they need to but just coming up a little bit short,” said Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. “We’ve got to have a short memory, move on and get ready … because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
David Bednar blew his second save in 12 opportunities, and his earned run average rose to 4.95.
“Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” Bednar stated. “It’s just very frustrating.”
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s resilience in the face of adversity.
“We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up,” Mendoza said. “Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game and we still are able to shake hands at the end.”
