Bessent Rejects Democratic Tactics: “No Wonder People Are Leaving His Blue State

SouthernWorldwide.com – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent found himself in a heated exchange during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing this week, clashing with a Chicago-area Democrat over economic policies, particularly in relation to the Trump economy.

Representative Brad Schneider, D-Ill., joined other Democrats in criticizing rising prices, linking them to the Iran conflict. Bessent, however, pushed back, attributing higher commodity prices to the current Biden administration.

At one point, Bessent directly addressed Schneider, suggesting that Illinois’s own economic policies were driving residents away. This remark clearly agitated the congressman.

The friction began when Schneider questioned Bessent about a previous statement regarding the Iran conflict being “ended.” Schneider pressed for clarification on whether Iran was no longer a threat to Israel and U.S. allies, and if its offensive weaponry had been dismantled.

Bessent responded with a smile, inquiring if Schneider’s statements meant he was in agreement with then-President Donald Trump. This was in response to Schneider listing goals that were often criticized by opponents of Trump.

“Unless an American life is lost, he does not believe that he will have to restart the kinetic attacks,” Bessent stated, referencing Trump’s approach.

As the back-and-forth intensified, Schneider became visibly agitated and reclaimed his allotted time.

Schneider then drew a connection between the Iran conflict and the increase in commodity prices, asserting that the cost of living was escalating and holding Bessent and his administration accountable for these spikes.

Bessent countered by citing Treasury data, which indicated a core inflation rate of 2.8%, close to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. He also pointed out that Schneider was focusing on specific grocery items with the largest price increases.

When Schneider dismissed Bessent’s assessment as out of touch and reiterated his belief that Trump’s tariffs were responsible for commodity price hikes affecting his constituents, Bessent offered a pointed observation.

“Well, you Democrats should know — no wonder so many people are leaving Illinois. Why don’t you come see me in South Carolina?” Bessent remarked. Schneider, however, raised his voice, disputing that people were leaving Illinois.

“You’re saying Illinois doesn’t have net outbound migration?” Bessent quipped in response.

Schneider then shifted the conversation to Trump’s settlement with the IRS concerning the leak of his tax returns by former contractor Charles Littlejohn.

Schneider expressed outrage that no one, including Trump, was “above the law.” Bessent retorted that the president was also not “beneath the law” and accused Schneider’s party of “weaponizing the system.”

“His taxes should never be leaked. No taxpayer information should be leaked…” Schneider began, only for Bessent to interject with his characteristic dry humor.

“Then, congressman, would you like to apologize to the president right now on behalf [of your party]?” Bessent asked.
