SouthernWorldwide.com – Christian Pulisic will not be participating in the United States’ upcoming World Cup match against Australia due to a persistent calf injury.
Despite efforts to recover in time for the United States Men’s National Team’s second World Cup fixture, a full week proved insufficient for Pulisic to regain match fitness.
The absence of the star player was confirmed by manager Mauricio Pochettino during FOX Sports’ pregame show. Pochettino announced that Ricardo Pepi would be stepping into the starting lineup in Pulisic’s place.
Pulisic sustained a calf injury during the World Cup opener, which led to him being substituted at halftime. He has had limited practice sessions throughout the week.
Pochettino had been fielding numerous questions regarding Pulisic’s availability for Friday’s game, maintaining a guarded stance until the official announcement.
Earlier on Thursday, Pochettino had indicated that his key player was showing significant improvement and would at the very least be ready for the team’s final group stage game against Turkey next week.
A meeting was scheduled for Thursday night between the team’s medical staff and Pulisic to assess his condition. The outcome of this meeting, however, was evidently not favorable for his participation.
Pochettino acknowledged Pulisic’s considerable effort to be ready, understanding the player’s strong desire to be on the field with his teammates.
During the team’s practice session on Thursday, Pulisic was observed engaging in modified training, separate from the main group during the media-accessible portion, a pattern consistent with his activity throughout the week.
In the previous match, Sebastian Berhalter came on as a substitute for Pulisic at halftime. Additionally, midfielder Malik Tillman elevated his performance in Pulisic’s absence.
Following Australia’s victory over Turkey in their opening World Cup match, the upcoming game between the United States and Australia will be decisive in determining who secures the top position in Group D.
A win for the United States would mark a significant achievement, being the first time since the inaugural World Cup that the team has secured back-to-back victories in the tournament. If the USMNT defeats Australia, they could clinch a spot in the Round of 32, contingent on Turkey not winning their match against Paraguay.
However, with Pulisic sidelined, the challenge for the United States has undoubtedly become more formidable.
