SouthernWorldwide.com – Counterterrorism officials are actively investigating a series of incidents in Scotland where a suspect allegedly carried out a rampage, resulting in injuries to five men.
The attacks, which authorities believe may have been motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment, commenced near a mosque in Edinburgh. According to BBC News, two men sustained injuries shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday.
The individual apprehended in connection with the assaults is a 36-year-old Scottish man. He is also accused of attacking three other men in a different part of the city.
Fortunately, none of the victims, whose ages range from 22 to 39, are reported to be in life-threatening condition. Three of the injured individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Reports indicate that the suspect also targeted a car at a gas station, which was later discovered with its windows smashed and an axe inside. He was also observed on surveillance footage pushing over shelves within the station’s convenience store, as per BBC News.
Further surveillance video reportedly captured the suspect engaged in an attack outside a pizzeria, wielding a weapon. Social media videos have also surfaced, depicting scenes of disarray in other areas of the city.
“Officers responded to multiple reports of a rapidly unfolding series of events across Edinburgh before arresting a man. Ensuring public safety was our paramount concern,” stated Police Scotland in an official release.
The man was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. local time and remains in police custody. Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton described the incident as a “shocking attack,” expressing her immediate thoughts for those injured and directly affected.
Paton emphasized a strong message of support to all communities, stating, “I want to send a clear message of support to all our communities that there is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland which is at its best when we stand together.”
During his apprehension, the suspect allegedly informed the police that he was “protecting the country,” according to BBC News.
“Extensive work is ongoing to establish all the circumstances surrounding these events,” Paton added. “We are receiving support from Counter Terrorism Policing and are operating under the direction of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.”
The Muslim Council of Britain has issued a condemnation of the attack, noting that the community is “rightly nervous and worried.”
The council further commented, “This incident comes not long after racist pogroms on the streets of Belfast that targeted minority families, and is a direct consequence of political rhetoric that demonises entire communities. To our community: stay vigilant, look out for one another, and please report any Islamophobic hate crimes to the police.”
