DOJ Pick Faces GOP Opposition Ahead of Confirmation

SouthernWorldwide.com – President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Department of Justice is encountering significant opposition from Senate Republicans, raising concerns that his confirmation process could be jeopardized or even completely derailed.

The process to either confirm or reject acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who is slated to replace former Attorney General Pam Bondi, has commenced in the Senate. Trump officially submitted his nomination to the upper chamber on Monday.

Two primary concerns are emerging among some Senate Republicans regarding Blanche: his involvement in the controversial and now-disbanded $2 billion anti-weaponization fund, and his stance on the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill rioters.

Blanche’s initial hurdle will be navigating the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) is seen as a potentially decisive vote, whose decision could either pave the way for or block Blanche’s confirmation.

Tillis had previously expressed strong opposition to the anti-weaponization fund. He even proposed an amendment to redirect those funds to the nation’s anti-fraud fund and voted in line with Senate Democrats to prevent such a move from recurring.

However, for Tillis, Blanche’s remarks and actions concerning the Jan. 6 rioters are the more critical “circuit breaker.”

“They better not have said for one minute that the people who beat up police officers, like these right down here, were righteous people,” Tillis stated. “You come even close to saying that, you don’t have a [chance] of getting my vote in Judiciary.”

The skepticism towards Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s personal lawyer before transitioning to the DOJ, is not limited to Tillis within the Republican party. He is also expected to face staunch opposition from Senate Democrats, both in committee and during a potential confirmation vote.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has accused Blanche of both protecting Trump from legal repercussions and weaponizing the justice system against his political adversaries. Schumer specifically cited “baseless charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center, Jim Comey, and others.”

“Trump and Blanche are cut from the same crooked cloth,” Schumer remarked.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) expressed uncertainty regarding Blanche’s prospects for confirmation. He noted that while most Republican members tend to be deferential to the president’s choices for key positions, and Blanche already possesses experience in the role, the current political climate makes no outcome a certainty.

Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) confirmed that the committee received the nomination on Monday afternoon. Grassley indicated that he has had a positive working relationship with Blanche and values his commitment to transparency and his support for law enforcement.

“Blanche is well-qualified and has shown his dedication to restoring law and order across our country,” Grassley stated. “The Senate Judiciary Committee’s work to process Blanche’s nomination is underway.”

Several Republicans voiced considerable anger over the anti-weaponization fund. Reports indicate that Blanche was privately questioned by senators last month regarding its operational details and the potential for Jan. 6 rioters to access taxpayer funds.

The extent of Blanche’s involvement in this initiative could significantly influence his chances of Senate confirmation, should he successfully pass through the Judiciary Committee.

“I think it’s gonna come down to the extent of his involvement in this weaponization fund,” Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) commented.
