Trump’s statement comes at a time when the reflecting pool, having just undergone a $14.8 million restoration project, is already facing public scrutiny due to issues like peeling paint and algae growth. This scrutiny arose mere weeks after the completion of the extensive renovation work.
“Things are really looking good in our Nation’s Capital, and add to that the fact that when I became President, Crime was rampant, and now, Washington, D.C., is one of the Safest Cities anywhere in the United States,” Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social.
He continued, “However, we’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool, which sits between The Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial.”
Trump further elaborated on the damage, stating that just three days prior, the grass surrounding the pool had been destroyed. He accused those responsible of also attempting to damage the interior surface of the pool, which had only recently been installed.
The President asserted that the vandals had not only damaged the grounds adjacent to the reflecting pool but had also employed chemicals to harm the pool’s newly fitted surface. He drew a parallel to substances used on the National Mall, suggesting a similar chemical agent was used in the Reflecting Pool with the intent to mar the restoration work.
Trump’s remarks follow closely on the heels of a significant event approximately a week earlier. At that time, a large “86 47” message was apparently etched into the grass in the vicinity of the National Mall, situated between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial.
Administration officials had previously interpreted this message as potentially threatening. They argued that “86” is sometimes used as slang to signify removal or elimination, while “47” refers to Trump himself, as he is the 47th president of the United States.
President Trump had officially announced the completion of the $14.8 million restoration project for the historic reflecting pool on June 6. However, within days of this announcement, algae began to proliferate throughout the pool, obscuring sections of its newly restored bottom, which had been painted a distinct “American flag blue.”
In response to the algae issue, the National Park Service and the contractors involved in the project took action this week. They deployed chemicals and utilized ozone nanobubbles in an effort to curb the algae’s growth. Additionally, workers employed a vacuum system, similar to those used for swimming pools, to physically remove the algae from the pool’s floor.
The park service issued a statement this week assuring the public that these mitigation efforts have no adverse effects on marine life or the environment.
Trump expressed optimism regarding the ongoing cleanup efforts. He stated that a significant portion of the algae, approximately 75%, had already been removed. Furthermore, he indicated that the area affected by the vandalism would be repaired early the following week.
“The algae is 75% gone, and the condition will soon be completely remedied, and the area that was vandalized, fortunately, is just a small area of damage, and will be fixed early next week,” Trump conveyed.
He also confirmed that law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the alleged acts of vandalism. Images circulating on social media on Friday depicted National Guard personnel and U.S. Park Police officers present and patrolling the area, underscoring the official response to the incident.
Furthermore, videos posted on social media platforms appeared to capture individuals gathered near the Reflecting Pool. These individuals were reportedly seen criticizing the renovation project and, in some instances, expressing satisfaction with the algae growth, adding a complex layer to the public reaction surrounding the issue.
