The journal did not disclose the identity of the child or his family. However, it detailed that the boy was admitted to the hospital weeks after an unfortunate encounter with a bat.
According to the report, the boy’s family recounted that 19 days prior to the onset of symptoms, he was visiting a cottage in northern Ontario. While sleeping, he was awakened by a bat landing on his nose and mouth. He instinctively swatted the bat away, and his father subsequently captured it in a cooking pot before releasing it outdoors.
The family did not perceive the bat’s behavior as erratic, nor did they observe any visible injuries on the boy’s face. Consequently, they did not seek immediate medical attention.
The situation escalated when the boy was brought to an emergency room 20 days after the bat encounter. He was initially sent home but was readmitted the following morning after his condition worsened.
Medical professionals observed a rapid deterioration in the boy’s health. He remained hospitalized for over two weeks before his passing.
The journal article stated that by the fifth day of his admission, his brainstem reflexes were no longer present. Life-sustaining treatments were discontinued on the seventeenth day, and he passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
The authors of the article issued a stern warning regarding any direct contact with bats. They emphasized that even without visible bites or scratches, such encounters should be reported to public health authorities.
Rabies is an almost invariably fatal disease in humans if not treated promptly with postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). This treatment is highly effective when administered shortly after potential exposure.
